I think this is a poor translation.

No, even saying this in Japanese it's basically stating it has no purpose beyond letting people see their characters jump.

We've already seen 2.0 concept art that has gaps we're supposed to jump over, just look at the PDFs

Uh..no we didn't see gaps we're "supposed to jump over"...we've seen crevasses but it doesn't mean we're supposed to jump over it.
