An easier bandaid fix might be to make the party rewards blanket. As in, as long as you're in a party engaged with it you get the reward when it dies whether you hit it yourself or not. It wouldn't cover all cases, but stragglers that barely manage to zone in and join a group while flying to the mark before it dies would still have a shot at something.
