In Tonberry, English-speaking people use Novice Network to chit chat and help each other running some simple stuffs.

    Did you report them?

    No?

Then you are just as bad as them. YOU are part of the problem.

If you DID report them, trust the moderation team to do the job you entrusted them with, and until then shut up about it, don't make the job harder.

Nither of those lead to coming here and trying to paint everybody as bad as the problem you got yourself wrapped up in.

    Good DAY and goodbye.

A fundamental issue I see in Exodus NN the few times a year I tab in is a handful of full crown mentors that live in the chat 24/7 giving absurdly bad advice to sproutlings, and every channel towards moderating that kind of behavior is either a ToS grey area or simply circumvented by the challenged mentor spite-kicking other dissenting mentors. I’m talking about “freecure is good, you pull you tank is valid”-tier bad advice.

I’m not overly worried about it as I can just avoid thinking about the channel by hiding it, but it’s just at its core not a good place or a good power structure.

Objectively, it has to be said that the whole social aspect of FFXIV is incredibly dysfunctional, much as I've met some awesome folks in my time.

There's no ingame global chat channel, the closest you get to one is NN. If it didn't exist, where (outside social media, we'll get to that later) would returning players, newbies, or people whose previous coteries disbanded make new connections? There's not a lot of random interactions (most chats I see in cities seem to be between groups of existing friends), and that's assuming people are really paying that much attention to the chat while in the city. There's no trade chat as there is in WoW (not that trade chat was always that much better, most of the time it was basically like Fox News if Fox News had RMT and content carry ads instead of regular commercials, but you did get the occasional interesting exchange).

Linkshells seem to be chronically completely dead apart from Hunt ones, even hellos go unanswered even if several people are online. Fellowships are mostly just a bulletin board of Discord links and seem to be little used otherwise.

FCs do not serve as the social hubs that one expects of guilds in most games (it not helping at all that the housing system severely impairs FC growth).

You're basically forced off to social media, and even there things are heavily twisted (largely because of social media platforms' policies, which threaten to severely impair Internet socialization on the whole going forward, really. Feels like sadly, we nerds had our 30 ish years of hope, the popular kids have taken over the digital world too now and our future is solitude and the dark insides of lockers. LOL).

Bloody hell….you’ve nailed it deep further than how I can relate to it in many ways,

Very well put & sadly it is our current modernism of ffxiv & most MMOs in general.

Honestly much rather solitary than go along with the flow of sheeps that just makes me cringe so much (Tik Tok for one & im not old either).

Global chats get too many hot takes and inappropriate chatter anyway. You can see this in areas where people use shout chat a lot such as Ul'dah on Balmung.

Although this happens in the Novice Network sometimes, especially by crafter/gatherer mentors, the filtering involved does help a lot.

Linkshells are usually dead because there aren't enough people allowed in them.

The Novice Network strikes the right balance by filtering people to an extent and by not having a limit on how many people can be in there overall, just how many can be in there at a given moment. That is different for a linkshell, where it's not a limit on logged in members, but a limit on all members including those that are offline.

No chat is perfect and occasionally there are incidents, but every novice network I've spent time in has been full of hours of answering new player and returner questions, helping them with queues, teaching them things and showing map links for quests they are stuck on. When I look at the novice network I am spending so much time doing these things and so are a lot of the other active mentors in there.

In other news, there is no technical debt from 1.0.
"We don't have ... a technological issue that was carried over from 1.0, because ARR was meant to kind of discard what we had from 1.0 and rebuild it from the engine."

Agreed. Mentorship should be removed along with it.

Hey, I just helped a random sprout with a story dungeon they were needing. I figure we have a new baby server here, may as well try and foster a decent NN while it's young. Be the change you want...and all that jazz

Good luck, but, unfortunately, a lost cause. If only more mentors were so accommodating and didn't use the NN as a global chat they can kick players out of.

Well, one may argue that people misusing the NN to have a global chat should give you a hint as a dev that there is a slight interest to have a global chat implemented.
A different one might be that there are a lot of Mentors out there that actually like to help new people and that there is an equal amount of people that just did
it for the looks and rewards, well, one may even say that SE lacks of a proper implementation to remove a Mentor from the Mentor role if he doesn't fulfill the role correctly.
Now throwing that all in the trash seems a little odd doesn't it?
