Many thanks for all the replies.

As is now clear, I read the words and as some of you pointed out the concept of "overheal" simply isn't mentioned and while I understand what that is I had no reason to infer that, this is the first time I think I've seen in any game where the excess heal actually is USED for something and not simply ignored.

    Thanks!

Here's how I make assumptions about whether overheal is ignored. Suppose someone is missing 5 HP and someone casts a 10,000 HP heal on them.

If I'm playing a game where the flytext or combat log say they regained 10,000 HP, the additional effects should work based on that 10,000 HP value including the overheal.

If I'm playing a game where the flytext or combat log say they regained 5 HP, the additional effects should be based on actual HP restored only.

It's a shame they could never balance shields and it always has to be this strange sort of split with a heal component and a small shield. A lot of the time the heal is wasted because you apply shields before taking damage. If debuffs always applied even when 0 damage is taken, we could have had more abilities that are simply a pure shield.

Yes, it still sounds really strong that you could stack a pure GCD shield with some pure oGCD shields and make a big raidwide do 0. But if you wouldn't have died, it's irrelevant. Shields are inherently smaller than pure heals, so you're putting more resources into negating that raidwide than you would by simply taking it and healing it fully in a button or two.

When they announced the shield/pure split, it was a good opportunity to rework barrier healers and make pure shield gameplay a thing. Of course shield healers should have some pure heal, perhaps some traits too, like overwriting any leftover Adlo shield converts the excess into a heal. But it should have been a gameplay style.

Instead, nothing changed, it just became more limited.
