Unexpected error and general stuttering in game

Hello, I too have some issues with Unexpected errors. I'll try to explain concisely to the best of my ability.

I bought a new Laptop some few months ago and have been playing FF XIV on dx11 without issues. Thing is, my dx11 looked like dx9 (more on how I found out later).

Few weeks ago I noticed minor stuttering in game when raiding and such so I thought I should update my drivers. I updated my BIOS and new GPU driver (through GeForce Experience). Ever since I updated my bios and GPU, things have gotten worse. By updating my driver through geforce experience, I believe it used its own settings in optimizing the game and made it run worse. The game appeared different when I ran it after, UI and font was smaller, graphics looked a bit crispier but it ran with more stuttering. Searching how to resolve the issue I saw people recommending changing to dx9 which I did and the game looked exactly how it was before I updated my bios and gpu driver while on dx11. Was I playing on dx9 the whole time even tho it said dx11?

The stuttering persisted even in dx9 but to a lesser extent but I now sometimes get crashes when things are really busy in the game. I have since uninstalled the game, reinstalled it, completely removed my drivers with DDU, installed latest ones without geforce experience, removed again and installed older drivers and fiddled with Nvidia Control panel settings but nothing seems to remove the stuttering. One thing I noticed after installing new drivers is that it tells me G-SYNC is ready to be used and I've never seen that before.
My GPU temps are reaching 90°C when playing, my idle GPU temps are 55-60°C, which I think is pretty high.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I really want to relay my exact scenario in case someone might have an idea. I would really hate to think my GPU is failing already.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that stuttering happens in other games as well tho they don't crash. Since the temps are high, would I be correct in assuming this is my GPU throttling?

We're very sorry to hear that you've been experiencing this stuttering in-game. As it does appear that you've gone ahead and updated the necessary drivers, here's a few things we would like to suggest as well as confirm:

- You had mentioned that the GPU appears to be going into the 90°C while running the game, which is pretty high, especially on a laptop. Double check to make sure PC is not over heating and remove any overclocks on GPU/CPU
- Open the Nvidia Control Panel and going to 'Manage 3D Settings'. From here, select 'Program Settings' and select Final Fantasy XIV. You should see an option to select the GPU. Make sure it's set to your dedicated graphics card (it may be set to 'Auto' by default)
- Perform a clean boot by opening the Task Manager and selecting the 'Start up' Tab. Once there, please disable everything listed, and restart the PC. This will ensure that only the necessary programs start-up and run when booting up after the restart to ensure that nothing could possibly be interrupting the game from running.
- Make sure that the Windows OS is fully updated (including any optional updates, as they are not usually automatically installed).

Thank you for replying to me.

I did as you said and set the OpenGL Rendering GPU to my graphic card but I did it globally as I cannot find FF XIV under Programs. I suppose I could add it manually tho.
I also disabled everything under startup and rebooted, went in the game and found that my temperature indeed got a bit lower, it was around 75-80°C while doing a Critical Engagement in Zadnor with 48 people. GPU usage also wasn't reaching 100% like it did previously, something I forgot to mention in my initial post.
However, during the battle the screen froze a bit, for about 2-3 seconds, then went back to normal, but at the end of the CE when everyone started healing and reviving my game crashed again. No unexpected error popped out, it simply closed.

Also, I'm playing on dx9 as I fear dx11 would only produce worse results.

EDIT: I may have spoken too soon. The temperatures get to the usual high temperatures eventually. The game is running fine on dx9 now tho and there is no stuttering, but there are crashes in specific CEs in Zadnor like I mentioned above.
Still, with the specs I have, I should be able to play this game on dx11 without any issues.

I would try setting the game to DirectX 11 on the client first, then login to the title screen, select Configuration, then select the Display option, in this menu select Full Screen and then select 2560 X 1600 and out of the options here, set it to 60Hz not 165Hz, as it will default to 165 FPS in the game, which will explain the Stutter and Heat issues as that GPU can't maintain 165fps on Maximum.
You can try 1920 X 1080 60Hz if 2560 X 1600 still Stutters, personally I'd go no higher in this game than 60fps (60Hz) with a gaming laptop, the heat will be extreme as you have seen, 90 degrees is borderline what a 3070 can handle, which explains crashes, it shouldn't get over 60-70 degrees max.

Borderless window mode will usually introduce Stutter in this game.

Also check the options at the bottom of the Display options menu, once you set the game to 2560 or 1080p 60Hz (even just to test heat, crashes and Stutter) make sure the Frame limit option is not set to Unlimited or 165, try 60 (should be set to 60 if you already changed the window mode to Fullscreen and 60Hz) and see if you can play with no issues.

I would also remove Geforce Experience, it usually causes issues with this game-if you still have trouble with performance.

Just to give an update.

I'm playing on dx11 and capped the framerate to 60. I don't experience any stuttering in FF XIV or other games for that matter. I did not have a crash since.
I'm not sure what I changed tho, I fiddled with Nvidia Control Panel again but in the end I reverted my settings to how they were during the stuttering. Maybe killing some processes on startup drastically improved my performance? Seems weird tho.

Temperatures are lower but I'm still reaching 80°C when things are really busy, especially in Zadnor. Could it be the case of dust accumulating inside my laptop and preventing airflow?
