There were real life soldiers in the Pacific who never learnt WW2 ended.

In 1974, Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese army intelligence officer, was finally persuaded to come out of hiding by a former comrade on the Philippine island of Lubang. Onoda-san wept as he agreed to lay down his rifle, unaware that Japanese forces had surrendered 29 years earlier.
In 1972, Shoichi Yokoi was found on Guam with no idea that the war had ended.
In 2005, Yoshio Yamakawa and Tsuzuki Nakauchi were found on a Philipines Island, both men in their late 80s still thought the war was on, and were hiding out for 60 years as they had deserted and didn't want to be tried as traitors.

I'd heard of the first one, but I have sympathy for the type. "Difficult" can't even describe how it must feel to live most of your natural life hand to mouth, then suddenly find out it was all unnecessary and you did it all for nothing. It's even worse to find something like this out in your 80s -- yeah, I'm sure they were glad they were rescued, but that's still a terrible thing to find out so late in life.
