This lead to the change for the friendslist thing probably, but nothing to do with not being able to gift certain items at all.

SE's stated reason for blocking items like minions, emotes, etc. is because they are one time use. They just don't care enough to make a way to detect if someone already has an item or not and prevent you from buying it for them.

Literally that simple. SE taking the easiest approach instead of developing a proper solution. Which is true for most problems in this game.

It makes sense that the most valuable items are no longer giftable if people are literally having their credit cards stolen and used to buy them for x amount of people. There's a bigger picture here that kind of needs to be looked at. If there's a better solution then fair enough but this was probably the quickest way to find a fix while they work on a longterm solution. Sorry some people who wanted to steal people's information ruined it for everyone for now.

yeah, I think we have to give SE the benefit of the doubt. Despite us memeing companies making brain haired decisions, when it usually involves money, there HAS to be some actual reason for their doing so

I saw a good explanation on Twitter about payment processors and charge backs that can explain a lot of this. Not happy about it, but it does make sense.

I'm not as clear on taking away the ability to gift some things period, like mounts and minions, unless the Mogstation isn't connected to the system that stores the information about what someone has, like you can see on the Lodestone. But to that I would say that I hope this is temporary and they're working on a fix there because taking away the more popularly gifted items just seems to be a very odd choice.

and in turn wise they have access to you payment information and buying codes and re selling them.

But also the buying of clears as well. they legilty need your info just to do it.

I don't see anyone acting as if Square did it intentionally; just poorly. Additionally, even if they did they'd hate to have you as their PR.

Pretty poor, yep. There are other ways to deal with the issue, even if it's friends for 30 days, then more unlocked for gifting. Or just link in what lodestone knows about mounts and minions. Web wise, it's not so difficult. The API is clearly there to pull up someone's ownership.

If I only read that notice I'd be confused like you. But it actually turns out that they:
- removed the gifting code system
- implemented "Buy For Friend" feature only on multiple use items
and thus
- outright disabled gifting for unlockables like mounts, minions, emotes etc.

Which is ... annoying. They should just let people buy stuff, dupe or not. Or even better if they show if the recipient already unlocked certain things.
