NPC Companion instead of Chocobo?

I know mounts have evolved since then, but isn't the idea of it being a chocobo companion as opposed to something else is the fact that the chocobo is your mount AND your fighting buddy?

Those two are the same thing in Lower Limsa and among a certain part of the playerbase.
