NPC Companion instead of Chocobo?

While Chocobo companion is something that isn't touched at all aside barding, i was wondering how would you feel if you could get a travelling npc character companion as a choice?

You could create one through Retainer service or get from GC Squadron, even one from Duty Support, maybe conjuring a spell or a puppet.
Battle wise it would be pretty basic with few skills but the reason is mostly for flavour and perphaps just feeling having someone that isn't your Chocobo.

Just some thoughts, i am no sure if they already talked about this and i do not expect to be implemented right away anyway

There was a companion NPC in XI and in XIV 1.0, 1.0 version of them even had a personality but all that got nuked with the 1.0 > ARR transition w/o any explanation or tying up of any loose ends with the NPC companion.

I know mounts have evolved since then, but isn't the idea of it being a chocobo companion as opposed to something else is the fact that the chocobo is your mount AND your fighting buddy? You travel around together. That's why when you mount, the chocobo companion disappears, as you are essentially climbing on top of your chocobo.

Those two are the same thing in Lower Limsa and among a certain part of the playerbase.

There were plans early on for there to be other battle companions aside from the chocobo, presumably other mounts like the Magitek Armor but after the work they put in to allow you to queue DF while still having the chocobo out they just stopped talking about any such plans. Well they stopped talking about it much sooner than that DF compatible implementation but once that implementation went into effect I assumed those ideas were finally dead internally.

Still hope they could do something with that in future, considering how Trusts/Duty Support is doing

The Path Companion however was never available freely in the open world in 1.0, and was restricted to only assisting you during several (solo) story battles, not too disimilar to what we have now in solo fights with story NPCs assisting.

Unfortunately, Yoshi regards the chocobo companion as enough for current open world content, as there is the Grand Company Squadrons, Trusts and Duty Support for instanced content like dungeons and certain trials (and what is available to use with them is being increased as time goes by).

I do miss my sultry moonkeeper kittygirl Path Companion from 1.0 though, but I've accepted she's gone and isn't coming back.

It feels to me like the whole Companion/Chocobo system needs some love and updating. Its feels rather arcaic that we still need to use an item to even summon our Choco! I would love it if there was a choice of Companion we can use, even if they just end up being 'skins' for our Choco to ware that makes them into other beasties, or NPCs.

You know, honestly, instead of getting some dumpster fire limited job Beastmaster (instead of a real job), I'd love to have the companion system altered to where certain creatures could be your companion instead. It'd be especially fitting for the tribal mounts.
