If this game feels anything like a job to any of you: please stop playing it.
You should be having fun like most of us are. If you're not, this game isn't for you. Go find something else to do that'll bring you joy.
I and pretty much everyone else I know 100% do the content for rewards. The second I've gotten what I need from a given tier of content, I go do something else until the next tier comes along. "Fun" is not sufficient to hold my interest.

Many people love to do content just to do it. There's a general consensus (outside of the forums) that Criterion is a fun raid. Many people do not subscribe to FFXIV recurrently. They do so for one month at a time, maybe only a couple of times a year. They buy a month get their clears in, then go back to playing WoW or whatever else they were doing. There's just not enough content to justify drawing this content out for a full year. And that's fine! Many people love this. Even Yoshida told us to unsubscribe once we were done.
So why beat a dead horse by giving content arbitrary rewards? Why create a Skinner box? We have other Skinner box games that we can play. Give us the fight, let us beat it, and don't make us do it again. I have better games to play.

I really have no idea how to take most of this, but the most obvious answer to your question of why "the vast majority of the replies to this thread..." is that the number of people who will actually come to these forums, view this thread, and reply, is such an infinitely minuscule % of the playerbase, that it means absolutely nothing in terms of generalizing to the FFXIV community at large."The vast majority of players don't do difficult content because it's fun"
"The vast majority of players do it for the rewards"
If this is true, then how come the vast majority of the replies to this thread will be about people who do difficult content just for fun?
Every time new hard content is released and there are complaints about rewards, there's always the expectation that people should just do the content for fun and for the challenge.
however, even world progression teams and streamers declare the above statements, and many of them act the same way.
I asked on Xenosys Vex's stream why did he only clear Delubrum Reginae Savage once and never went back in, I asked whether he should do it for fun or for the rewards, and he openly declared that he does it for the rewards.
*reads title*
Yeah I can see that

If it's fun I can do it regardless of rewards. If it's not fun or extremely hard then the rewards should be worth the time and/or effort...or i just don't do that thing.

Remember Castrum Litore in Bozja when it got released? While it was fun and brutal for first time, the rewards were so bad that lots of people, once they completed, never bothered to redo leaving new players at their demise.
Now it gives a very sizeable chunk of stuff, along with mettle so dying once or twice wouldn't be so bad.

Getting rewards is fun. The rest is just performing the correct trick, something I get out the way to get to the fun part. If the trick so hard I will never be able to do it right, I have nothing to look forward to and won't want to do the trick anymore.
I do it for both the reward and the fun. As someone that collects mounts I will do almost any content they lock a mount behind. But I draw the line at stuff I won't enjoy. For example, I don't really have many of the PVP mounts outside of the Garo mounts just because I don't enjoy that aspect of the game. They could put a really amazing mount behind getting a top rank in mahjong and I would never bother to get it because I just don't care about mahjong. I think the only PVE combat related mount I haven't gone for yet is the DRS one but that's because I haven't had time to do it and not because I don't like the content.
Do I do savage and ultimate for the reward? Yes. But do I also do that content because I enjoy it? Yes. I wouldn't prog a 14+ minute fight if I wasn't enjoying it.
