"The vast majority of players do it for the rewards"

"The vast majority of players don't do difficult content because it's fun"
"The vast majority of players do it for the rewards"

If this is true, then how come the vast majority of the replies to this thread will be about people who do difficult content just for fun?

Every time new hard content is released and there are complaints about rewards, there's always the expectation that people should just do the content for fun and for the challenge.

however, even world progression teams and streamers declare the above statements, and many of them act the same way.

I asked on Xenosys Vex's stream why did he only clear Delubrum Reginae Savage once and never went back in, I asked whether he should do it for fun or for the rewards, and he openly declared that he does it for the rewards.

Doing content once isn't really uncommon. The experience isn't gonna change after the first time so unless you have a reason to be there (like roulettes or a farm of some sort) why else would you run it?

The one thing I don't really agree with though are people who won't do old content now because of lack of rewards. Like, if you just aren't comfy doing certain things because of skill level or anxiety or something then fair, but at least do it once and try it before you shun it. Personal achievement is cool too.

Given the choice would you go work at a job for pay or no pay? I think the question answers itself.

I want to get paid, but I found a career I enjoy doing. So its not a struggle to wake up in the mornings. Why not have fun while getting paid?

Having a job that I enjoy would be wonderful... assuming I get paid. If my job doesn't pay me, I'm not going to continue working there, regardless of how much I enjoy it. Likewise, if a piece of content doesn't have a proper reward system, I'm going to do it once and then abandon it for content that does. When content doesn't have a proper reward structure, there's no reason to continue 'working' there long-term.

And on the flip side, no matter how good the reward is, if its not fun why bother. Why subject yourself to that, when there's a myriad of jobs/content/games out there that will be "fun" while also giving you rewards you seek.

because life in 99.99% of the time is not like this. take the gaming industry what % of all the people working in it doing what they want.

There's just not enough content to justify drawing this content out for a full year. And that's fine! Many people love this. Even Yoshida told us to unsubscribe once we were done.

So why beat a dead horse by giving content arbitrary rewards? Why create a Skinner box? We have other Skinner box games that we can play. Give us the fight, let us beat it, and don't make us do it again. I have better games to play.
so why give rewards at all from lvl 1 to 90?? just have the starting race skin. then the job gear look an d1 weapon. why give more?
and what people buy a mount if they do not play the game?

Most people don't have that luxury, sadly.

But back on topic, it's an MMO. Time = money, and time = rewards. If our time isn't well spent on a particular piece of content, either through poor design or lackluster rewards, said content usually just dies.

Fun can only last so long if other people dont do content "for fun". Besides fun is subjective.

Also, since it takes time you will need to have a reason. For some, fun is a reason. To have healthy amount of people keeping content alive, "fun" can be had somewhere else with actual rewards (roulettes, savages, extremes, island)

Example: Chocobo racing. Literally only reason to do it is for title and helmet. Nothing else. No one will see your race chocobo rank nor stats unless you stream.

So.. If you were to do something over the top like 100 duties (cap for day) of racing even at peaks 99% of time you'd see full team of AI opponents and maybe one sprout. Why? The time spend on 100 races couldve been spent on making gil, farming relics, getting gear, farming mounts, glamour..you get the idea.

Is racing fun? Heck yeah it is. Would I do it after helmet and title? Its not that fun. If there was no AI opponents racing would be dead.

V&C dungeons are fun, really fun. But will just few tomestones keep people doing them in few months after they get glam and mount? Time will tell. Thankfully there is solo mode for story-mode! So we dont have delu issue where 2 people join and cant beat it. But anyone wanting specific criterion later tiers.. :/

Interesting take, but we work in order to sustain ourselves and those who are dependent on us. We also do it to increase the quality of our livelihood. This is a video game, and if the game is not fun and/or does not offer some kind of rewarding experience, people will not play it.

What I was taught is the moment you're willing to take pay for something you enjoy, it becomes a job.
