I can't believe we're required to do 5 hours of side content to unlock EW relics, previous relics didn't have any such grind associated with them. They should have at least given us warning in advance that we would have to do this to unlock them.

if you truly needed to do 5 hours of hildibrand you clearly did more than the last few quests (and you also didn't skip the cutscenes, skip everything and the thing can easily be done in 2,5 hours or so if you just hammer the skip button.) so you got to experience an actual storyline, silly as it is, unlocked several emotes, glamour items and trials. and yes, previous relics did require several hours of time investments to even get started, no bozja without ivalice raids for example.

they also gave us a heads up that we need to complete the hildibrand questline, more than once in fact, and considering you didn't find the forums just yesterday i frankly just don't believe you that you didn't get the memo.

To be fair I do dislike it but at this point I've accepted doing it, like it's really annoying but it's also whatever really, I'm used to "talk to npc" the game

it could be worse.., it could be tied to some other thing that actually requires more work out if you.

that said, the reasoning behind the Relics actually makes sense anyways.

There have been tie-ins of old content to unlock new relics before. This is nothing new. And just like before, we had ample time to do it. At least with Hildabrand, you could probably skip all of the CS and solo (or duo) all of the instances unsync'd and complete it under 45 minutes. Possibly less.

The 24-man pre-req for some other relic... that took hours simply because you can't unsync the content and the queues were long.

Yes, they required completion of the Ivalice raids to access Bozja. Which, at least so far, ties in more than what has happened with the first step of the EW relics.

Honestly, this first step could have been done without the inspector being involved, but it is what it is(and I generally enjoyed the Hildebrand quest series, so I'm not disappointed with it myself)
