Here's what I don't get. Every reward in this game has been gear/glamour, mounts or titles. If not, then minions, materia sometimes and chocobo glamours.
What sort of rewards were people expecting? Gear on par with savage?

To make a long story short, yes. Or something that at least had stats on it for the normal mode. Given its inspiration from both WoW dungeons and the fact that idealized gear sets dropped in 5.25, it was well within the realm of reasonable expectations.
Авейонд-сны
I fully expected the rewards to basically be mounts/materia and other miscellaneous stuff, but a part of me was definitely hopeful I could have an alternative form of content to run to gear my alt jobs. I totally get they don't want to hurt the crafting market and I'm all for that.....but I'm also broke and can't afford to buy 610 crafted gear for all the alt jobs I like to play lol.

Short answer: yes
Criterion Dungeons are on the same level as Savage, if not harder. While a bit subjective, you won't find many amongst the raid community putting P6S ahead of any single fight of the three Criterion bosses. Frankly, the last boss has more going on than P7S. So why are these Savage equivalent fights offering only dime a dozen materia as their rewards? It's like clearing P8S and getting a single Direct Hit X for your efforts. The devs keep putting Savage on this strange pedestal despite having brought it closer to midcore level content. It isn't anything special nowadays. At least not 8-9 weeks into the tier's lifespan. And this is coming from someone who clears week 2, logs extremely high and clears Ultimate. It's okay to have raid gear come from other sources. In fact, it'd be a welcomed addition.

"Stand in the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honor matters."
"The silence is your answer."
Wait, really? o,o they're harder than current savage? Okay yeah I see why people want more out of this xD Ain't nobody gonna farm stuff this hard for the sake of Materia. People generally do Hunt Trains for those.Short answer: yes

(edit: ok there's a mount and orchestrion roll, but that's so minimal... The portrait kits being locked behind savage just looks awkward)

This is like...several times a circular definition. Some definitions provided aren't but "a JRPG is... made in another country, but would be difficult to differentiate from a JRPG[...]and widely considered as being inspired or influenced by a JRPG"?For the purpose of this article, a JRPG is defined as a franchise which: (1) is considered a role-playing game by reliable sources and was made in Japan, or (2) made in another country, but otherwise the franchise would be difficult to differentiate from a JRPG due to having common traits found in JRPGs such as: anime/manga character designs, RPG elements, fantasy setting and widely considered as being inspired or influenced by a JRPG.
Could have just cut all that down to "an RPG with anime/manga character designs" or designating the difference in "roleplaying" between eastern and western RPGs because I'd argue that's where the key difference between the two are. That writer is pretty funny for instead opting to all but say "A JRPG is something like a JRPG."

To be honest?
Doesnt matter what they do, doesnt matter what they put into the game...you lot will ALWAYS find something to complain about.
Its funny..in a sad, tragic kind of way.
Calling me a "white knight" for praising the game, appreciating their hard work and enjoying myself. GOD FORBID I should do that..........
Sheesh.
