Let my Fishing people go! At least make fishing a second class one for boring and other for hardcore Fishers!

I... Think you should focus currently on your endgame gear already, those last 10 levels can be a fair bit bothersome but I made do with the highest tier avaiable paddle-i mean-macuahuitl, a Bladed Lantern Shield (I later upgraded for an Eagle-crested shield because I had one for my WHM, otherwise would have kept it. I ended up at L50) and a Horn Scale Mail (which was a leve drop).
Hands/legs/feet/head were all leftover L31 stuff I had from levelling Lancer.

That'll do for levelling, I don't have much experience doing endgame stuff with PLD since i'm far too Leeroy Jenkins for my party to let me, but the final PLD quest I did in full AF gear+Cobalt Plate

IMO you should by nothing at 40. If you're with a group that's worth their salt, you'll be 50 in a matter of hours anyway. The only thing you should buy at 40 is level 50 gear, even if you can't wear it yet. After one or two trips to the wolf camp in Natalan and you'll be looking sharp in that new level 50 gear.

I'd get a set of steel plate (it's L39) which will get you all the way to the high 40s, which is when cobalt plate replaces it. I prefer to not be carried by my group and like to invest in my performance at all levels, even though ultimately exp groups tend to come down to THM/BLM nuking everything before melee can contribute much.
