    Show your Support: Customizing Weapon Glows

    SE.
    We’d love the ability to take the glow effect from one weapon and put it on another.
    I figure we could unlock said glow effects and impose them on different models.
    It’d make less flashy models, as well as unlocking weapon effects much more desirable.

    I think you might be severely underestimating how deliberate the glow effects are.
    It's not like they just press a button to overlay a filter over the model, they have to individually map out where it glows.

    So, let’s consider.

    First, the glow needs to be mapped to the model it is on. So if you want to be able to put that glow on any weapon we have now (and presumably any we get in the future), that means you need to map every single relic glow to every weapon in the game, past *and* future.

    So, say, the glow for the first glowy step of the Heavensward relic needs to be mapped to every single weapon available in A Realm Reborn and Heavensward, and Stormblood, and Shadowbringers, and Endwalker, and whatever the next expansion is, and…

    The glow for the second glowy step of the Heavensward relic needs to be mapped to every single weapon available in A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker, and whatever the next expansion is…

    The glow for the *third* glowy step of the Heavensward relic needs to be mapped to…

    You get the idea. At present, there are several hundred WAR weapons in the game; while some share a model (different steps of a relic, reuse like having the Rinascita weapon models be the Crystarium tomestone ones), that’s still many many weapons to map every glow to…even just for WAR.

    This isn’t to say there isn’t a way to do it, but you’d probably need to vastly simplify things. For instance, make every weapon of a given type adhere to a specific outline (e.g., all WAR weapons must be axes with a blade of a certain size/shape) and then you can make a single reusable glow overlay for any given glow. It just requires either getting rid of the diversity in weapon shapes (meaning getting rid of weird outliers like the Aspodelos war hammer) or excluding those from glow options; you need weapons that specifically fit within that glow layer’s shape.

    Or you could model a glow layer into everything (which is still a ton of work for existing models), and preserve variety of weapon shapes, then just only really vary the glow layer’s color and texture, not the overall shape/effect of the glow. (E.g. nothing like the Sharpened step of the anima relics or the big glowy cloud of certain Eureka relic steps, and anything like the Blade’s weapons from ShB is right out.)

    None of which is what folks want in a system like this, I suspect. Because it feels to me like players in general might think it was a step backwards if all WAR weapons shared the same outline, all WHM canes were the same shape, etc. Or if all glows were much the same, just with different color/texture.

    Can this include the option to turn glows off entirely? A lot of nice-looking weapons are ruined by clouds of particle effects and glowing rings and all kinds of crap.

    Packet, THanks for the more in-depth explanation, though I wouldn't want every single glow to be implemented at once.
    And MightyMollusk, pretty sure there's non glowy versions of every weapon save for savage Raid weapons

    They don't even make glow weapons for new jobs now for nearly 1-2 years, minus when they release an ultimate that includes said new jobs that gives a primal weapon of that type.

    That's not quite accurate. Yes, glowy extreme weapons are often limited to the jobs that were out when the extreme was current; they are, after all, the normal weapons from that trial with the glow added. There are exceptions; they added weapons for DNC and GNB in the Shinryu EX weapons, and everybody has a Thordan weapon now (because of Dragonsong, which uses the same models).

    But, for instance, we literally just got Titania EX crafted glowy weapons, which do include DNC and GNB... but do not include RPR and SGE. Alas.

    So whenever we get glowy weapons crafted with the crafting materials from the Endwalker extremes, those weapon sets will contain SGE and RPR weapons... but I suspect we're not going to see those crafted weapons until whatever the next expansion is.

    WE would like glowing effects? Hell no, YOU want glowing effects.

    It'll make the game look like some free to play pay to win Chinese MMO if everyone has a sparkling weapon.

    Honestly, I would rather have a toggle that turns them on or off. I'm not going to ask for them to remove the glow (even though they give me VERY STRONG WoW vibes :/ ) but I would happy with a slash command to remove the visual clutter.
