For many their only option for human-interaction is through the internet.
Like online games, social media and apps.

The first person I ever dated I met in an MMO. We were both in uni, played a lot of games to pass the time, and lived across the country from each other. It happened to turn out that when she graduated she had a job offer in the city that I lived in.
We dated for a few years, amicably split when our work took us in two different directions, and have remained great friends for over 15 years now - attending each other's weddings, watching our kids grow up, etc.
Not really weird at all - same as finding someone through any other social activity.

I don't see anything weird about it at all. I have friends who met through the game and have since met up IRL and started dating.

Whether it's through this game, or someone you met at bowling night, or you're writing love letters to psycho's on Death Row, if you find someone you enjoy being around then to hell with what anyone else thinks.
Do what thou will shall be the whole of the Law.
I've always thought it was weird finding dates at a bar instead of somewhere you could find people with common interests. Also, this is how you necro, at least I can read a couple of funny comments.

Yeah I agree. If into dating it would just make sense to look in areas of your interest for someone who will have similar interests.

Nice! This is only mildly dramatic but it is still an endless debate with implacable opponents on both sides.
I have posted on a "dating" thread.
I'm always looking for friends and maybe even romance in the game. I found it once back in 2014 or so. It was thoroughly enjoyable--that is until she was caught be her husband and she didn't have permission. It lasted about 4 months and it made the time fly. Fantasies abound in Eorzea and I see no reason that can't include some irl or just in-game romance.
