The people we met

I’d like to read about experiences you’ve had with other players that had an impact on you, whether good or bad (but hopefully good!).

So write down any stories about people you met in game that ultimately meant a lot to you.

Ill start:

I am an eso refugee, although I loved the storyline and strolling around, the combat often made me want to scratch my eyes out. Anyways that’s not what matters.

I started finally paying a sub to ffxiv after having a bunch of free trial accounts (sorry Yoshi :3) and lo and behold, my old eso friends (who quit way before I did) were hanging out around Gridania to my absolute bliss. They used the same character names even here.

One particular friend stuck with me a lot, we winded up getting married for the dresses, he bought a house since I was just new at the game and had no idea how to make gil, we were in the same FC, after mentoring an old eso guild somewhat together (it was his guild, I was helping people with whatever they needed) and things couldn’t have been better for a while.

Unfortunately the friendship had to end because more often than not, people playing and chatting together until six in the morning winds up in feelings being developed and when they are one-sided, jealousy shows its ugly mug.

Fast forward, I met a tiny lala that recruited me for their FCs, the tiny lala was a huge man with huge beard in real life which I often found very funny.
The fc leader was this amazing woman who would make a joke out of everything, another one was an older lady that just loved crafting and gathering, but we tried to get her in dungeons multiple times still.

We all kind of sucked, which was ok because we would rinse repeat every dungeon and most of the fun was being on discord together talking a lot of crap especially on our wine nights.

Ultimately I changed servers and not long after, everyone kind of stopped playing, it’s been years since I saw them online anymore but I still never forgot any of them.

Other encounter I still laugh at to this day is when I joined an extreme trial for the first time, told them I have never done it and I died so much to the point they started calling me “emotional support bunny” because it was the only thing I could provide at the time haha!

It's kinda sad but I don't think I remember how I met a majority of the people on my friends list
One encounter that's always stuck in my mind though was way back when I started playing in Heavensward and I saw a Dark Knight while leveling my Gladiator, back then you needed to level Conjurer as well as Gladiator in order to get Paladin so in my naive sprout mind I assumed that for Dark Knight you'd need Gladiator and Thaumaturge instead.
I told the DRK this and imagine my utter disappointment when he told me that "uh no you just talk to a guy and unlock it right away", it was like finding out santa isn't real.

At the beginning of SHB, when I was really pissed that there were no male vieras, I did an extremely androgynous viera, and put on the mogstation mustache to do male viera RP as a form of protest.

At that time, I liked to stay in very crowded places, because it was fun to see people's reactions to my character, so Limsa became a strategic point for a morning walk.

At that time, I met a lalafell who, whenever he saw me, would give me a trade to send me a carrot. It was almost like a daily to get the carrot from that lalafell, and it turned out that every day I was waiting for him.

After I got really frustrated with the limitations of being a viera + trying to make a male viera back then, I returned to miqo'te. I haven't seen that lalafell since. I miss him, and I confess that sometimes I go back to Limsa, hoping to get that trade again.

Back when the Great Sundering of EU happened (read: Servers were split into Chaos and Light), most people I played with or interacted with in the German Forums (except 2 friends) ended up on Light while I was on Chaos. Someone else in the Forums, left on Chaos, jokingly said I should meet him at the Ul'dah aetheryte so we could take Screenshots of how much cooler it is on Chaos. After that, I was invited to farm Savage Mounts with them (Omega Raids) because their Caster was 'on vacation'. Three weeks later, it turned out to be an elaborate way to find a new Caster for their Static. I never did Savage before and reluctantly agreed to try it out.

Three years later, I'm still part of the Static, we had some small changes, but those guys became dear friends.

I was really dreading getting past Crystal Tower. I had tried the game once before (without being in a FC), and I quit at this point.

So this time around I joined a free company, and I had expressed in chat how much I was dreading getting past it. I really hate raids in MMO's, and I play FFXIV for other aspects of the game.

So, this time around, when I got there, the FC leader offered to run it with me and co-heal it with me. She said she didn't like those raids either, but she'd do it with me so I wouldn't face it alone. As expected, I died five times from mechanics I didn't understand. It was chaos, and I had no idea what was going on in any of the fights, so I just kept frantically healing any health bar I saw dropping until I would die to the next mechanic. It was about as much fun as I was expecting, i.e., none.

But her being there with me made it bearable. She put a marker on herself so I could try to stay near her, and she prioritized rezzing me immediately every time I died. It really meant a lot to me that she ran that with me, and she was so nice about my admittedly glum and lousy "Eeyore" attitude towards the experience. Regardless of how long I continue in FFXIV, or what other people I meet in it in the future, I will always remember this person, and how she got me through Crystal Tower.

I've been in 2 FCs my entire time in this game since ARR launch. One I was a founder of, and my current one.

Met my current FC leader back around ARR launch, we got randomly duty findered together in Toto Rak if I recall, had some funny banter back and forth in chat during the run. Ended up friending each other after the run, but I did not join her FC since some IRL folks I know were running our own at the time.

Fast forward a couple years into Heavensward (patch 3.1 or so) and the FC my friends and I founded died. Of the IRL folks; One quit entirely, the other two just come back for patch content. The others that joined our FC either had already quit by that point or left when we stopped really actively running the FC. So I ended up passing FC lead to one of my alts when I decided to join my current one. I'm generally not a super social person, but with the people in this FC I worked out of my antisocial bubble some, so to speak. Participated in some of the "dumb" events and parties they hold (occasional Halloween glam contests and the like). Stayed with the FC since initially joining, even met up with the lead and some of the others in the FC when we went to Fan Fest 2018.

You can, to an extent. You can create several groups, name them and apply them to different friends. I name them blunt names (PF, savage, linkshells, FC, hunting, new player) and assign them to people based on the place I met them in to assist my vague recollection of the 200 friends on my list.

You can filter it so it only shows the friends in that category as well, but it loads slowly when you have a lot of them.

It's been there for a very long time, for many expansions at least.
