Since Nidhogg is the originator of Dragoon's power...

Would we gain any sort of new powers after we had temporarily fused with Hraesvolgr's eye to fight Nidhogg on equal footing? Nastrond and Stardiver seem like attacks we inherited from Nidhogg, so I wonder what we would gain from Hraesvolgr if his eye had any lasting effect on us as a Dragoon.

I don't think so. At least, not in their current state. I think they were just regular soldiers that had dragon partners before King Thordan killed Ratatoskr. His son then became the first Dragoon of his type that we know of today.

Makes you wonder what the original Knight's Twelve and King Thordan's powers were like after they ate Ratatoskr's eye. Especially Haldrith, since he not only partook of her eyes as well, but also had fused himself with one of Nidhogg's afterwords.

Supposedly not. I'm pretty sure it starts with the first Azure Dragoon. The original King Thordan dies to Nidhogg and it was his son, the first that retaliates, becoming the Azure Dragoon. It was then set up so that the best of the Temple Knights were put through dragonslayer training and the best of those Dragoons became the Azure Dragoon.

This was what we were told of their history. It's most likely that dragoons were ordinary lances prior to this and that the jumping techniques of the dragoons came forward as they realized they would have to combat the dragons.

Edit: To answer more clearly, they apparently did not, but you don't have to consume a dragon to become a dragoon either.

You dont need to consume a dragon to become dragoon. The dragons knew how to share their magic and the dragoon combat style isnt just suited to fight a dragon but also to fight from a dragon's back as estinien proved numerous times.

I was just saying that's how the current Dragoons worked. At least from my botched memory. xD I learned dragons could share their magick by enchanting an Ishgardian's weapons and armor and that the fighting style of the Dragoons originated from Haldrith after he became the first Azure Dragoon. Every Dragoon after him just further perfected and added on to the arsenal of skills and abilities he started with. And the riding on the back thing was common place before King Thordan betrayed Ratatoskr. There were many Ishgardian soldiers that road on the backs of their dragon partners, though none of them had the powers of a Dragoon. Their armor and weapons were more than likely just enchanted with Dravinian fire and nothing more.

I can see modern day Dragoons using that technique though. Partnering up with a Dravinian and their Dravinian partner sharing their magick with them, thus giving them the powers of a Dragoon. Would make for a nice and interesting change in how new crops of Dragoons come about.

Hraesvelgr based powers would be cool. But never going to happen.

Change Chaotic Thrust/Chaotic Spring into Hraesvolgr's version of Diamond Dust and Wyrmwind Thrust into a move that changes depending on which "Eye" you have activated. Nidhogg when the red eye is activated, Hraesvolgr when the yellow one is, and then both once you activate both at once. Though, the "scale" system would still work the same, it would just change depending on which wyrm eye you have opened at the moment after each two Mirage Dives.

Sounds cool, but won't happen. It's mechanically identical to what we have now so there's not really a reason to go through the contortions of trying to imagine new flavor into the Job. Would be more profitable to give Hraesvelgr's unique aesthetic to a different Job, but that also won't happen. Pretty sure they're just gonna leave him alone.

Dragoons predate Thordan's betrayal of Ratatoskr, though as Soge said back then they were not as they are now.
