It's an older woman thing. My grandmother is the same way. They think that because books were the major source of information in their time, that you MUST read books to get information these days. Of course that's no longer true as the internet offers far more information than a book every could, and is far easier to access, but they're from a different time. Although, at least when my grandmother tells me that she's at least trying to be helpful even though she's wrong. Silverbane's just trying desperately flailing around screaming things like "nazi" and "1984" in an attempt to get people to side with her. I'm a strong believer in criticizing the bad and praising the good, but sometimes in our community there's a bizarre trend of knee-jerking to deflect criticism when it starts to get serious. The forums obviously get mired in a lot of bad faith toxicity by the same handful of people who dominate the conversations everywhere, but overall; I think that good faith criticism and good faith praise can (and do) exist and are two sides of the same coin. The devs in FFXIV get a lot of things right -- but they also get a lot of things wrong, and it's important to praise them where they knock it out of the part, and offer genuine criticism where they don't without the immediate posturing that someone is either a white knight or just a terminally online complainer.

Agreed. I'd honestly rather have the forums be a place where we can praise the devs when they deserve it, and be critical when its deserved. That's always been my position on this topic. People who praise the game aren't white knights. People who are critical aren't haters. White knights are people who go around shutting down criticism, and haters are people who complain with the intention of having the game self implode. I genuinely don't think we have too many actual haters on the forums if I have to be honest. The vast majority of the people I've encountered that are critical of the game give their feedback out of a desire that the game would improve. However, I do believe the forums do have a serious problem with white knights who pretend that forums meant for feedback are meant to be social media platforms for them to have a positive echo chamber in.

if you intention is to give the development team feedback, it would really be appreciated if people could stick to that rather than wandering into ageist diatribes which have nothing to do with the topic at hand and just promote dated stereotypes. Might have been unintentional, but a few of this posts have wandered down that path not just this one).

If they have the right to call anyone who doesn't kiss SE's boot a 'hater' (not talking about giving the dev team praise when they earn it, I'm talking about dev worship), I can call them out for all of the times they've been a drama baiter. Personally I think it's off to see people say it's ok to give praise but only when it's worth it. Folks don't seem to realize that's going to vary by the person. What you may feel is worthy of it may not be worthy to someone else. Not up to anyone else to decide what's praise worthy for someone else nor should you shut that down for anyone.

If you have the stance that folks can complain about what they want (which many here do) then it should be the same when it comes to praise.

I'd be curious to see how much ire there would be if someone genuinely made a thread thanking SE for releasing a mogstation item.

Yeah, I do agree with you here in the sense that it is subjective to the individual. My first post here, and any subsequent post after, are all opinions. Do I believe in my own opinions? Of course, I do. Everyone does with what they feel and/or believe. My main point to start was that the intentions of the OP weren't viewed as pure and rereads of their posts sort of reaffirm my suspicion that this thread wasn't created with the best of intentions. Everyone can be thankful and praise what they feel needs thanked for and praising. I just might not agree with what is being thanked for or praised, and others might feel the same. It really does go both ways, and in the midst of all the chaos that is sometimes hard to remember, even for me. What I dislike more than anything is watching people stir the pot in an attempt to start drama or drown out the voices of others, and that's why I responded the way I did. I'm not perfect, but I do consider myself an excellent people reader. At the end of the day, I just want the game to be better, because I know it can be, so I voice my concerns. It's certainly an uphill battle around here, but I will keep trying regardless.
