They made it up. The tax doesn't exist. The classes just don't do as much deeps. It's a silly term for silly people.

The ranged tax has been a thing since post HW. Their answer to ARR BRD was literally to put a cast time on them in HW and people hated the cast times (I didn't mind it personally) thus they removed it and lowered the physical ranged dps heavily.

Notice the rather clear distinction between melee+blm compared to the other ranged jobs. The only reasons for that cliff to exist are either:

1) Ranged tax.

2) They're just really bad at balancing.
