I googled what happened to him, and yikes... The guy was called out on it by someone who offered a better translation for the term. Turns out the term really is in the original Japanese (which is what you said about it being 1:1), and not only did he struggle with finding anything better, someone actually did tell him that though inappropriate, there were terms that fit the scene better. He thanked them and even explained that it fit the context and the era. But he was still lambasted for it after Hardcore101 made a bigger deal about it than it already was.

At that point it was an entire community following a guy adding fuel to a fire. So he really didn't have much to fight back against, his only option really was just leaving the project. Had he ignored it, it could have gone sour for the game since people would associate him to the game. And that would hurt the project.

Honestly, as whiny as the English forums might be, I think the JP forums can be a lot worse. I don't think EN General is in the habit of threatening or wishing death on the dev team. But changes to Samurai did need Yoshida to tell people in JP to chill, and from what I've been told, he's been seeing stuff like that happen since his Dragon Quest days.
