Ugh; I really hope this game doesn't turn into a goofy ass FF fanservice game like dissidia. That said, I can see how they could slip some stuff in without it clashing too drastically, if the Void keeps being involved in the plot, and I trust Yoshida and the writers to handle things without obvious awful shoehorning-in of things from other games. It's my one worry about 2.0, and while on one level I can see the appeal of goofy fanservice, I'm much more interested in XIV being about Eorzea and what happens to it than about an onanistic trip down memory lane.
7UP!
I want a town quest like Wall Market where you have to wrestle oily muscled dudes for pieces of womens' clothing.

Palace of Hell, Pandaemonium from FFII, add it!!!!

This is a concern I have as well.Ugh; I really hope this game doesn't turn into a goofy ass FF fanservice game like dissidia. The key is how well it's integrated into the lore and design of FFXIV. The devs should use the Zodiac Espers of FFXII as model for this. While they were the old FF Bosses, they were designed in such a way to become very much part of the Ivalice universe.
I do have confidence in the Devs on this though. Gunblades are in the game, but they look different enough from the FFVIII versions that they fit here. Same with Materia, Artifact Armor, etc...
Then again.. Cait Sith and Fenrir look like 100% imports from FFXI...
Anyhow:
List of locations from other FF games that I'd like to see in FFXIV:
- Magnetic Cave (FFIV) - Wooden/bone weapons, leather/cloth armor ftw!
- Sunken Shrine (FFI) - Fight underwater~
- Magitek Factory (FFVI)
- Ultimecia's Castle (FFVIII) - Only in design style.. obviously not the name.
- Pharos at Ridorana (FFXII) - same as above.. don't use name.
- Iifa Tree (FFIX)
- Macalania Forest (FFX)
- Feywood (FFXII)
- Sky (FFXI) - ancient floating garden (stolen from Laputa btw) -- I'm a bit torn on this one though because I don't want too much FFXI in this game.

To be fair, those are -awesome- designs for Cait Sith and Fenrir.
Basically agree with you, though; a good friend of mine is kinda worried about the magitek armour mount concept art of the live letter looking way too much like VI and not enough like XIV's context for magitek armour, but I think the writers, Takai and both Yoshidas won't let anything through that looks or feels out of place.

I would love to see places that are familiar, or inspired by previous FF games. I however do not want direct updates of locals from past games.
Like Narshe. I'd love a snowed in steam-punk town, but I don't want it named Narshe.
I'd love to have a mini-game theme park like the gold saucer, but don't want it to be the same one from VII.
I want locations that are familiar, but have them be unique to the XIV world.
We have the Warrior of Light/Crystal Warrior jobs. That's already fan service, so it's too late. Dissidia wasn't "goofy fanservice" btw, it was a fighter based around the FF series which each FF had it's own contained world and lore, so obviously it would have to bring them together in some fashion.
Who's to say Eorzea isn't about "a trip down memory lane" (Our Echo power..remember? loL) Who's to say XIV isn't being built to encompass the FF worlds in an MMO setting, much like XI did with FFIII? What happens to Eorzea will have it's own storyline, we're not suddenly going to fight Kefka, Cloud of Darkness or Sephiroth in our storyline. Iti seems like you were hoping XIV ended up as a generic MMORPG that people will pass over because why play XIV when I can play any other F2P MMO I can download off a portal website like GPotato?I'm much more interested in XIV being about Eorzea and what happens to it than about an onanistic trip down memory lane.

Ugh; There's nothing goofy about FF lore. Dissidia is awesome, thank you.Ugh; I really hope this game doesn't turn into a goofy ass FF fanservice game like dissidia. Nope, actually, that's not what I said at all, and for the record, I loved dissidia, but it was goofy fanservice.
Jobs that have been in almost every single FF game since FF1 and their iconic armour isn't what I'm talking about; ChiefCurrahee's post sums up my thoughts pretty well, actually. The Echo works /within the context of Eorzean history/, so bringing that into the discussion is a bit disingenuous. If "encompass the FF worlds in an MMO setting" is where Yoshida wants to go with FFXIV, I'll trust his direction and chances are I'll wind up loving the game, don't get me wrong- but there's piles and piles of potential within Eorzea's worldbuilding that's been there since the game release, Hydaelyn really fascinates me, and it worries me a little when I see people calling for or hoping for copy-pastes of other games' locations into Final Fantasy XIV. I want XIV to succeed on its own merits and within its own context, not as a Void-fuelled Final Fantasy nostalgia trip. I would have thought you out of any regular poster would have understood the intent behind what I said, but I suppose I was unclear; sorry about that.
(An example of what I mean, for clarity's sake: Having an NPC in the past of Eorzea, a legendary black mage from the Fifth Astral named Shatotto, is a cute reference to a beloved NPC. Having areas deliberately designed to invoke the feeling of locations in other FF titles would be a good way to achieve what Yoshida refers to as an "FF feel". Having the -actual- Shantotto or the Gold Saucer from FFVII show up in Eorzea would be a good way to cheapen the entire experience, and if you read the OP and a lot of the responses, people are definitely skewing towards the latter, rather than the former. As a fan of Eorzea and FFXIV as such, I find this worrisome. Don't you?)
Edit: I'll admit the tone of my original post was a little more sarcastic than it needed to be, but "allow players to roam through settings and areas they might be excited about from earlier installments." doesn't allow a lot of room for creative reinterpretation, does it?
7UP!
