Have you tried running the game in Windowed mode, not Fullscreen or Borderless, just Windowed.

You can if haven't already, turn off the Steam Overlay to test as well.

You can also try removing the Nvidia Geforce Experience app completely, and download and install just the GTX 970 driver by selecting "Driver only" on the official Nvidia site.
This often causes conflicts with this game, including Nvidia Overlay, make sure that isn't on.
