    Yeah it'd have a decent uptime for the Terrain effects, certainly possible to boost their effects and lower their duration, I'm also sure that there's calculations on how much a % boost to crit/DH vs potency would be and make them closer to being even, but I *did* want them all to feel different and varied.

    Honestly could make them just be a self-boost instead of a persistent AoE, but I was honestly inspired by making an ability like Leylines function different, at least for this initial concept.
    To have different effects without a priority they could have different kinds of utility. You already have effects that encourage either melee or ranged and a terrain for resource gen, you could have something like a move speed buff, a shield or healing, being able to cast while moving, reduced recast on the teleport ability, different size effects, anything that isn't a direct damage increase but could allow for more dmg in certain situations. A foresty terrain that granted and/or buffed concealment might be cool though that's a direct dmg increase.

    Making Terrains too much like Leylines wouldn't be great, hm... they could be larger by default for ease of use, or have an ability to increase their size. Rather than dealing dmg over time some of them could grant access to an ability or two, maybe if you have something like a volcano you could have a button to make it erupt dealing dmg to enemies in it so if they move out after you're not losing as much. They could slow or bind enemies in them for dungeon packs. They could apply a debuff to enemies in them so if they move out the debuff remains for a bit. Just some random ideas.

    I was debating this one anyway, honestly. I do enjoy how bard and machinist in PVP can cast while moving, can certainly see this with an ambush combatant.

    Technically they are, already: Leylines is a 3-yalm radius, while the terrains are 5-yalm. Could be bigger of course, especially if we change the effects around.



    Could make it like how 3.0's Summoner worked with DWT, and changing the Wrath abilities to end the Terrain, that way they can use it whenever and end it when they need it
    Would need some rebalancing on the numbers for it but here's some thoughts

    Remove the dot from the Forest, grant damage reduction. Wrath grants concealment and a (short?) damage buff.

    Probably keep the dot on the Desert, I can dig the volcano thing. probably inflicts a dot. Probably the biggest raw damage

    For the Ocean/Storm, perhaps grant a healing effect to the terrain itself. Wrath would increase movement speed, possibly an attack speed up for a time after use, especially since only the ranger needs to be in the terrain for the boost on this one.

    The Tundra can probably keep the dot. Would take a good amount of math to figure out the best potency for it to go along with the focus gain, but something along those lines would work well. Wrath is a glacier bash, possibly with a focus gain.


    I did like the "finisher" aspect of making it a rapid strike use after using all of the Terrains, but I think i like ending the terrain with Wrath instead, personally

    OH YEA, i would also advice of putting the gapcloser/disengage button together and just makeit work based on your distance to the boss being on melee range makes you disengage and being out of melee makes you gap close, this is something I personality dislike in rdm and rpr is to have two button to engage and disengage, you could call it something like tactical engagement. if you do choose to change it's name I would suggest something like Hunter or just straight up Scout.

    That's another one I actually considered with this one! I don't know about the logistics of proximity-based weaponskills so I relented and split them up.

    Would be easy to toss some other actions on there if things worked proximity-wise, could even toss a ranged combo in there to replace the base combos at a range, would be quite cool. Would be another layer of complexity, but still cool.


    Still considering alternate names but I'm attached to Ranger for now. Scout's a little on-the-nose, Hunter is something that exists already, actually something I took some inspiration from.
    Also Assassin and Sniper but those don't fit thematically for this one

    I do understand that Scout is on the nose but personallity i dont think its too bad, it would only be a problem if it didnt used scouting gear and I didnt suggest things like assassin, or spy because thats mostly what ninja does too principally with the assassinate skill.
    also i plan to write a potential job to geomancer so don't be surprised if the terrains are a bit similar to your ranger terrains xp

    Go for it! these are just concepts to mess around, its so much fun to make fake jobs, especially once you settle on a core mechanic! I debated if i wanted to make the Terrain effect more of a geomancer thing but tbh this one was more inspired by pop culture Rangers from TTRPGs where druid stuff's a thing, and Geomancer's the closest, so thought it fit here too.

    I would imagine a Geomancer would probably take a lot more of a draw from terrain effects like this than a ranger would, would certainly be fun to see how it would adapt with it

    Might mess with it someday but I'm actually working on a Sword Saint now because i've run Orbonne a few too many times, so that's probably gonna be up here in a while.
