    Come now, don't play coy.
Your stance on FFXIV is well-known to anyone that occasionally roams the OF and pretending that you are oh-so-neutral won't work.

You are one of the first to always repeat that FFXIV is clearly doing well and a good game and using it's success in terms of active players as proof.
Don't be shy, it's alright to own up to your opinion.

There is the thing though, COD has a story because it need something to keep people interested beyond shooting things. The story itself gives players something to do while they engage in the core part of the game: shooting things. It is very similar to how RTS games like Starcraft work.

RPGs are the opposite. The game is the story, but it needs something to do to make it not just watching a movie, so they have combat.
As with most story based games/rpgs, once the story is done, your typical player doesn’t keep playing. Some might, sure, but average player doesn’t keep grinding monsters once the final boss is done.

FFXIV does exist in a weird space because it has elements of both, but the devs have data showing what the players do and develop based on that. As you see what the devs are spending resources working on, it should be clear this game favors casual single player and/or non-combat content, going so far as adding NPCs for dungeons and the island sanctuary. Combat-centric content hasn’t really evolved since 3.0 with each expac getting 3 big raids, 3 series of 8 man raids and several trials. That’s it.

Again, in CoD, the story exists to serve the combat and make combat more interesting.

There are bonuses for relatively fast clears and that's it. They're not about do any further adjustment of existing content. This is why the Variant model is coming out, with tougher challenges in the same area.
