It's not mandatory. It's just a little enticement to try to get some of those people to return their deposits. It does leave a sense of dissatisfaction though. From the wording of that announcement snippet, it seems that specifically only the people who withdrew their deposits then went on to get a free house will be able to benefit from this compensation. Out of all the people who were affected by the lottery bug, these people are the ones who were least negatively affected. What about the winners who diligently let their deposits sit while SE worked things out? Do they get any compensation for their honesty? And of course, the ones who got it worst were the ones who left their deposits in and did not go on to win a house. Their gil languished untouchable for over a month and no compensation for them.

Dissatisfaction almost seems to be one of the design goals in the housing system.

Wonder how many players are going to pay 3 million plus to get a few wall posters that say "SE was willing to give me a free house but what I really wanted was these posters". No doubt a wealthy few would as long as the posters are an exclusive for those who beat the bug after getting a refund.

I don't know how this is seen on the JP side of things but it's definitely not good business on the NA side.

Does seem somewhat unfair given these people did get their houses for free and to try and get them to pay it back they are enticed with an exclusive reward although that exclusivity isn't confirmed yet.

Thumbs up SE, reward people who won houses for free with the opportunity to get potentially exclusive posters by "paying" for their house (and potentially sell them to others for even more gil). I can only hope that these will be available to everyone as an apology from SE for such a bad housing system, but I won't hold my breath.

Really puzzled by the logic where the winners need to be compensated if they choose to pay for their house.
I can see the logic of giving people an incentive to hand over the gil, but a poster saying 'sorry' seems such a strange choice.

'We're sorry you won that mansion and so very sorry you have the choice of paying for it, we're really, really sorry...'


It's a pity they're not sorry for the people still trying to get a house. With record numbers of players, demolition off, wards still exclusively FC and not even a hint of more houses being added anytime soon, the lottery is an exercise in misery for most participants.

All I see about this "voluntary return" is SE gives up dealing with the mess they created. This "free house" is clearly unfair to everyone, "voluntary return" feels like SE is passing the buck to players to deal with the unfairness.
