I hate to say it but I would prefer a cash shop situation, like ESO, than the restricted both in gameplay terms but also actual availability that we have here... Of course I'd prefer no cash shop and a perfect system the most, but wish in one hand and collect chocobo turds in the other. On the more hopeful end though, I am excited for both the initial experience of Island Sanctuary but also the potential future of it (like adding an inn room cottage that is pre-fab would be a great start, but further in the future you might start to see housing like options).
I do like to say that I believe fixing the situation would likely be an extremely difficult accomplishment, but of course do not mind saying I wish it to be done anyways (though I wouldn't suggest it's easy lol). Or, and I feel I've 'felt' hints of this possibility in some time to come... in a new MMO. Given many differences between this hypothetical MMO and FFXIV it might be seen as possible to play both and have enough feeling difference that they don't actually, entirely, cannibalize each other.
For example using Yoshida's sly comments (I strongly believe he is a planner and also to take his musing as serious musing, even if they might be planned for years in the future)-- this new one would be more modern and drop in / drop out 'able'. In some ways to me it sounds a bit like if FFXIV was inspired by WoW then the new one would be both inspired by FFXIV's experience, what didn't fit but could be cool, and also perhaps for example GW2/ESO. Of course the goal in both situations shouldn't be "WoW-killer" or "copy that MMO exactly", but to me I imagine the 'new MMO' would likely be far more action, account wide, etc. Might even be more monetized like those games, where there is less burden for monthly but more cash shop. Which I don't say with glee, but that would further help them standout from each other and allow more likely for players to play both.
If we assume, it's a big assumption but I believe is not unreasonable either, that the new games coming out are able to help inform the next MMO- like FFXII did.. then we might also look at FFXVI and perhaps Forspoken as well. I would also imagine PvP might take a stronger stand here too, given the (huge freaking assumptions) of faster smoother combat and also Yoshida's own predilections. Personally I also think PvP is always a great way to extend the life of a game, since no matter how much PvE you add or how hard you try it gets really hard to make it not feel the same as before (and I feel is a common aspect of old MMOs where people just start to comment more and more about how things should feel fresh again but it's almost impossible to do... meanwhile PvP can feel fresh for much much longer, I believe). It would also line up with one of GW2's major pro's, given we're swinging wildly in the clouds already I would suggest that.
Certainly playing Nostradamus here, but given my not terrible predication rate.. this is my guess for the future lol. ... So I'm not sure FFXIV will get these, both due to difficulty but also because it would be another bullet to add in the differences between the two. If they essentially made "FFXIV, ARR part two" then I would imagine FFXIV would take significant impact.. so my thought that there will be intentional differences and use of resources that is attempting to be as efficient as possible.
Huge imo / assumptions, please bring all the salt.. only vaguely based on, imo, hints I've seen dropped and my feeling to read between those lines with mysticism and vibin' lol.
