I ithnk people who can't self repair are very likely to not carry dark matter, and perhaps even not know which they need. And the payment step would probably be there anyway, to compensate repairers for their time.

Hmm. True. Perhaps the cost of the transaction should be automatic based on the cost of the dark matter. It's not too big of a deal, but it actually is pretty easy to eat through a bunch of dark matter just on your own merit, so it is a slight concern. Plus, I also feel kind of bad charging, and will likely more often than not waive it off.
