The Rising is prettymuch always a confusing and irrelevant event for newbie characters where some random guy alludes to you having adventures from MSQ you haven't played yet and gives you a minion of a character you don't know.A bit disappointed myself, tbh. Not that we're getting it or anything. Just, isn't something I can share with lowbie friends to draw them back to the game.
"Hey, the anniversary event is coming up, and that's usually pretty neat. Oh... but this time all you get is a minion of someone that means nothing to you yet..."
yes. Before we really learn of his importance, he was shown twice and alluded to once.Solus is in fact part of the storyline even in ARR; he's the Garlean emperor in 1.x and even in ARR, only passing away in the post-Praetorium storyline, if I recall right. At which point there is a succession crisis; Solus' grandson (Varis, at the time the High Legatus of the first legion) and Solus' youngest son started a civil war over who would get the crown. And in the end Varis wins -- thus why he's the emperor we deal with later.
I swear I remember a cutscene in the post-ARR slog where Varis literally walks up and spits vindictively on Solus' casket.
The SB Appearance and the casket one.
both are near an end game
the casket one obviously doesn't show his face.

I truly hope that someday they’d release the actual wind up of Varis so that they both interact. Doubt he’d interact with Anima.

He's so ugly!
I love him!

Varis's default expression is an angry scowl, but yeah, he stares at the casket while the Scions are giving voiceover exposition, then spits on it and walks away.
Honestly its probably way more awkward for the people living in Eorzea. They would just look at the minion and ask why the Garlean Emperor was given out, when he was the one that started all these wars. After all they have no idea who he really is and even then I doubt they would see him in a good light.

We do have dozens of Garlean mammets running around Eorzea, mostly windup versions of the weapons used to slaughter Eorzeans, in equally in-universe poor taste, and we have plenty of other villains like Kefka who destroyed worlds but have a sympathetic backstory excuse (and unlike Emet I find actually entertaining and funny). So it's a reward that they can toss up onto the cash shop in a year, and one that a lot of other fans are happy to get. The cynical part of me says that cash shop reason is why he's an event reward instead of Bi-Color Gems. Brave New Yshtola with her sorcerous look was more a real spoiler, I think.
