As a savage/ultimate raider AND a massive glammer I am torn about this. It is for me a bit of a thing that I get to have something others don't have access to. I put in all the work to get the gear dyable and it is a pride thing to be able to wear a chestpiece that is dyed between all the people standing there in their undyed gear. I would probably not use a VFX piece (except weapons) because it would be an eyesore and it would be hard to mix and match with other gear in the game. Which means there would have to be a toggable option when it comes to regular gear and then we are back to we look the same without having put in the same amount of effort.
I do think they are moving in that direction with making AF gear that was locked behind extreme content obtainable through pvp. I get that people want it but...you can basically always go back and unsync content at get the gear then. It doesnt take alot of time, really.

I think it's a fun little cosmetic reward for people who do savage.

The great thing with Savage is that it all eventually becomes super accessible via unsync, so its just a matter of waiting a few patches if someone doesn't have the drive, time or skillset to do on-content savage.

Plenty of other games lock cosmetics and recolors of gear behind optional hard content. Are you sure you aren't just frustrated that something you want is locked behind something you don't want to do?

To be fair, most games I can think of do not lock the ability to get a version of the same gear that you can dye behind said content.

A different recolor of a thing (or one with different dye channels)? Sure. A mount? Absolutely. A special weapon? Yep. All of those, I can think of many other games where they lock the acquisition of those things behind harder content. But the ability to dye the gear at all is one I can't offhand recall other games really utilizing. It is a little bit of an odd choice by SQEX.

Now, I'm going to be running savage regardless, because I enjoy the content. But I do find the no-longer-relevant savage gear sometimes still glamour-relevant; I still use the Edengrace caster top (dyed Dalamud red, for RDM), as well as the Edenchoir fending helm (it goes startlingly well with the level 90 paladin artifact gear, and dying the helm pure white makes it a perfect match color-wise), and the Edenmorn maiming jacket (which is some S-tier reaper glamour).

And I have friends who do not have much interest in savage who are sad they would need to go do savage in order to get the versions of any of those pieces of gear which they could dye.

This is why I actually think the more simple solution would be to let you trade in the normal tokens at 3x the cost of the savage tokens in order to get the savage gear once the raid is an expansion past. It would give more glamour options to people, and would actually give some use to those tokens you always get in normal raid roulette and immediately throw out (or flee the instance before they end up in your inventory in the first place).

But I also think that once alliance raids are an expansion past, you should be able to buy the gear from that raid with the raid tokens. E.g., now that we're in Endwalker, if you wanted the YoRHa Type-55 fending top from the NieR raids... instead of having to run Puppets' Bunker over and over and pray the YoRHa Type-55 coat of fending drops for glamour, you could just go spend 5 of the Puppets' Coins items to buy the coat.

Adding extra items to NPC vendors once something is no longer current is a much easier change to make on both a technical level -- and, one assumes, an institutional/design policy one -- than changing out how they handle normal vs savage raid gear.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So long as it wasn't something like you can only use X or Y colors on normal and then Savage is anything, then I'd be fine with that.

I just hate that we keep getting these really great styles with gear and then it's white...or black...or grey.

I'm frustrated SE treats something like choosing your own gear color as something that needs to be a reward instead of being standard. I believe I mentioned earlier in the thread that the role quests also did this and I did those and still don't like that one part of the reward was dyeing gear. I'd rather have real, actual rewards for putting effort into doing something.

The least they could do is make replica versions of savage gear from the previous tier/expansion available.

An item I got from winning a contest (not sweepstakes) was added for a Moogle tomestone event for literally 1 tomestone and it was the exact same version and not a replica. I think it's fair to just add dyeable stuff once it's no longer hot content.
