FF14 being 80% made of references and having a very thin identity of its own should bother me a lot more. But at present, I don't care that much. At least until we manifest Blitzball into reality.

Will Estinien end up mind controlled? Will not-Golbez be somebody's sibling? Who is the spoony bard?

Endwalker is like one big homage IV. The moonward gear is based on the main characters from IV. The first two dungeons are named after places in IV.

While the guy in the Post MSQ scenes are very Likely Golbez.

There's a lot hidden in there!

That's already happened. Twice if you've done the ARR dragoon quests.

Endwalker is baby's first Gurren Lagann friend...

Seriously though I know Gurren Lagann didn't invent the tropes that Endwalker used, but come on now. A final battle at the edge of space where dynmas aka fighting spirit is the source of power...

Also https://youtu.be/LajtDVFfAUo. I mean come on.

One more thing I like Gurren Lagann and I'm meh about Endwalker so more explosions and probability altering missiles is all I'm saying.

Or the villain being the physical manifestation of despair.
Or the moon being secretely a spaceship.
Or the previous main villain being the only reason the apocalypse hadn't happened yet.
Or the improbable last second team-up with former villains.
Or the fact that almost half the entire cast sacrifice themselves in order to help the heroes reach the final villain (except in Gurren Lagann's case, the deaths are permanent)

Honestly the deaths not being permanent in Ultima Thul made me absolutely hate that zone because it is just a padded waste of time. It's not, but when you kill off all of the Scions to just bring them back it's insulting.

I was actually really surprised with how much FFIV was referenced through the actual MSQ. Leading into the release of Endwalker, I thought the references would be more of a trial storyline or something side-quest related. No complaints from me of course, I'm a fan of the call backs. I've been waiting for FFIV to have its day in the sun!

I definitely agree with the sentiment that Zodiark was given too little time on the moon. I wish the MSQ would've built that up a little bit more.

I will admit I thought at first maybe Thancred might actually be dead, but once Estinien got his little monologue and death scene I knew it was going to be a lot of talking and "death" and that whole portion of the story lost any weight because I knew it was all show. There is no way they are going to let all of the main cast die off, especially Y'shtola who has now had 3 death scenes.

The aspects unique to FFXIV should not have been cast aside like that, especially in the manner they went about on the moon.

Whether shocking or no, my stance on this game remains unchanged in that it needs to work hard to restore my confidence. Disregarding negative feedback is not how this game will see continued improvement - the fact that it is discounted up to 50% off in Japan right now could be seen as cause for alarm.

Perhaps instead of chasing after references, they should do more to develop FFXIV’s characters and plot in order to establish and sustain more long term interest. Though admittedly, I’ll gladly take a Rosa or Rydia over Y’shtola, the sole adult female scion in our current party. Those heroines were far more palatable and memorable than her.
This. FFXIV is not my first Final Fantasy game but I am honestly not a fan of the series. I've tried multiple times to get into the stories and game play and just couldn't. FFXIV is the first I've actually enjoyed. All of these references mean very little to me and while I like that fans of the series enjoy it, I'd rather the game have its own identity.

Right now it feels like we're dumping out our massive bin of assorted legos only to build the same exact house over and over again. I feel this is especially true for a lot of our main cast. Y'Shtola and the same fakeout death every expansion. Alphinaud going through the same character arc / screw up and "growth" every expansion. It's time to stop rehashing old ideas and dragging things out from other titles.

And please please PLEASE no more "The power of friendship reaches across time and space to help us win the day and defeat evil!" This isn't Kingdom Hearts or Fairy Tail.

The prayers scene in the battle against the Endsinger is something I do not view with high regard. You can't tell me the "despair" the scions went through is anything akin to the ordeal that the cast of FFIV endured. I definitely agree on the legos thing - this cycle of supposed character growth has only become more obvious and repetitive with time. This among other reasons has served to drive a wedge between me and the story.
