How to play SGE on controller

So I just came back to a year hiatus. I loved the noct stance on ast but understand they are more of a regen healer now with noct being a CD.

So, I took a look on Sage which sounds what I look for.. on paper.

But there is so many abilities at 70 and many sounds like they do same things, causing me feeling quite underwhelmed.

What abilities should I prioritise and put down on my crosshotbar?

SGE is quite easy and doesn’t have that many buttons so everything can go on your cross hotbar

What’s good about SGE is that SGE goes heavily on the idea that AOE healing abilities are also your best single target healing abilities as well, kerachole, physis, panhaima holos and pneuma are all AOE heals but they are also the bread and butter of your single target healing kit as well, since kardia is targeted to who you want you can chose to swap it freely or leave it on the tank, it doesn’t chose wildely like SCH’s embrace does

Eukrasia augments your GCD heals to have shields on them and turns Dosis into your DOT, keep that in an accessible location, otherwise everything in SGE’s toolkit except Pepsis has a use so find a place they are all comfortable on, if you want specifics kerachole, physis, haima and taurochole I would put in very accessible locations if you want to focus on dungeons, out kerachole physis, pneuma, holos and panhaima front and centre if your focus is on raids

Otherwise just give it a try, SGE seems complex at first but really it’s just baby’s first SCH

dont put krasis pepis and soteria and you should be fine. I suggest practice a button memory that you can flex the job well on dummies like imaging situations on when to use certain abilies but sage is pretty easy to pick up i play on ps5 and pc with controller.

I want to, it just that I’m so used to have 2 aoe heals, two single target heals then a couple gcd and damage skills. SGE seems to have several of all categories, I think that’s why it look so confusing to me.

Welcome back and welcome to SGE!

So, there’s a few ways, but here’s how I did it (it reflects my SCH):

    Left Side (L2)

    D-Pad:
DPS skills on the block (Dosis, Phlegma, Dyskrasia, and Eukrasia).

    Face Pad
Single target heals (Aka, tank focused) on another (Diagnosis, Druochole, Soteria, Krasis).

    Right Side (R2)
    Face Pad
    AoE focus heals and Esuna
    (Ixochole, Kerachole, Prognosis, and Esuna)

    D-Pad
More specific augments and utility (Lucid Dream, Taurochole, Zoe, Pepsis)

    For Left XB
    D-Pad
Emergency raise/saves: Swiftcast, Egeiro, and Rescue

    Face Pad
Usually more situational, but easy access: Icarus, Toxikon, Haima, Kardia. Icarus is usually in the same spot as most dashes of all jobs I play.

    For double Left
    D-Pad
Situational uses that don’t hurt if o forget about it: Rhizomata, Surecast

    For double Right
    Face Pad
Main AoE big heals/cooldowns: Physis II, Holos, Pneuma, Panhaima

Feel free to tweak it around as needed!

You'll be able to fit everything on the double cross bar no problem. I keep eukrasia and my gcd heals right face buttons, dps skills left face buttons, esuna right side left dpad and otherwise mapped it almost identical to my scholar. I can post a screenshot tomorrow if you'd like.

That would be lovely if you wouldn’t mind.

    My SGE hotbars:

I keep most of my healing stuff on the first one (old habit I had since ARR)

On the second is where I keep my DPS and some of the healing oGCDs I use frequently

The third is where I keep my res, rescue, quick/surecasts, and extra stuff

    Hope that helps. °˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°

Thank you, it helped a bunch. Moved around some skills to suit my muscle memory from my other healers but after a few roulettes I think I’m getting a feel for the job. Seem pretty fun so far (only 75 right now)

I tend to have a lot of my healers set up similarly so I can use muscle memory on all of them (for example, Left Trigger + B button is Glare/Broil/Malific/Dosis, and Left Bumper + X button is Dia/Biolysis/Combust and is where I put Eukrasia since I use it with Dosis to get SGE's DoT). So it may depend on where you put your buttons that are "similar" on WHM/SCH/AST if you play or played those.

I have all my damage spells (mostly on Left Trigger side) and my common use heals and CDs on my main bar, then on my second bar set is where I have the less common ones. I have Kardia on my second set on Right Trigger + Y button, with the Kardia boost skill there beside it on Right Trigger + B button because I mostly only use SGE in casual 4 man content where Kardia is set and forget. I also have LB on that second set, Sprint, and so on. I DO have Pneuma and Zoe on my first set (because otherwise I forget Pneuma exists and seeing it there on my Left Trigger + <- D-pad left reminds me it exists) and I can have it there among my DPS buttons.

I tend to have two full bars on my healers because there's no way I can play with only 16 total buttons (one crossbar "page") outside of PvP. Two pages gives you 32 buttons, which is enough for WHM and SGE, and SCH can be heavily massaged to fit, lol (AST is impossible. I've tried.)

If you need more, I could list out my entire set-up. But as I say, I think the best way is to find the similar abilities you had on your AST and put the SGE's variations in those spots. Durochola in place of Essential Dignity, Dosis in place of Malific, Diagnosis in place of Benefic, Prognosis in place of Helios, and so on and so forth. Nothing is 1-to-1, but often the bread and butter spells or spells with similar effects exist across the healers.

    Hope that helps!
