    New player requesting some guidance.

Hey guys I just recently started playing FF14, my brother had a buddy pass from his CE and so I thought Id give it a shot. So far im actually really enjoying the game, especially the crafting system. I just have a few things that I need cleared up.

When levelling a combat class, once out of the levequests what is the best thing to do? Grind mobs? And if so is there any page or whatnot that has the best places for doing so?

Is levelling a crafting job smart for a first time player? Or should I level up some combat jobs first?

And the last thing. Why can I not alt tab without my game crashing

Thanks for any advice you guys are willing to share, really enjoying this so far!

Hello Bryoal and welcome to FFXIV!

The new player help forums might have some useful information for you, especially the leveling spots thread.

I recommend doing leves and grinding with a few other players or a full party for exp. Leveling a crafting class is always good, but you might want to level it with leves instead of buying the materials to save and make some extra gil. You can level different kind of jobs simultaneously, no need to focus on only one.

Unfortunately, you can't alt+tab with a fullscreen version of the game, only in the windowed mode. There's an unofficial fix for that though.

I wish you great adventures and enjoyable stay in Eorzea!

Best bet for leveling outside of leves is to shout in Uldah for a party, or use the serch dfature, set your status to seeking party and your prefered class to what you want to level, then do some leves or craft while you wait (latter might not get a party, i'm not sure how many use it)

Leveling a crafting class before DoW/M is perfectly doable, but you could be stuck on leves or spending alot of time making money, if you really want to craft I would look at leveling a gathering class I see from your profile your a BSM, mining will save you alot of money in the long run so you don't have to buy ores all the time.

In FFXIVconfig change your display to Windowed, then change the resolution to the resolution of your monitor and you will beable to alt tab (its a known bug) you may have to disable snap if you want to drag the window beyond the screen so you don't see the title bar, and be in a psudo-fullscreen mode (you will beable to see a little bit of it, but apart from that it looks like full screen)

Wow thanks for the quick replies. I have one last question though and thats on how the best way to gear up in this game is. Should I buy my weapons from a vendor? Do they drop? Im currently trying an archer and still using the level 1 bow, which seems to be making my life kinda rough (Lvl8 atm).

And I take it that levequests are the best way to aquire Gil while still levelling?

There are 2 ways to get weapons, one is the market wards, but low level ones can be hard to come by, the second is to go to the ARC guild in Gridania go to the vendor and he will have some bows, and arrows at a very reasonable price (better than the market wards anyway)

Don't buy from the wards or NPCs (anything over level 10). Look up the recipe on mooglebox.com, buy the materials and search for a crafter to /tell them. DO NOT SHOUT FOR ONE, no one will respond.

Leve quests and side quests drop some gear pieces and you can also buy some of the lower level gear for a fairly cheap price from NPCs. Some Notorious Monsters also drop gear and weapons, but you usually need some friends to help you kill them. At level 25 you can start doing Toto-Rak raid which drops level 30 gear and weapons. Moogle Box is a great site for browsing gear and weapon options. I recommend updating your weapon every 10 levels or so, and for arrows I recommend going Warped --> Iron --> Steel --> Cobalt. When you start doing Grand Company quests, you can buy steel arrows from them for gc seals.

Check the Mercantile houses (market wards) for weapons. Some really low (like 1v 1-15) weapons may be cheaper from the vendors but other ones will be cheaper from the wards -- or as people have mentioned, look up the mats on lodestone or mooglebox.com and see if you can find a crafter^^

Levequests, sidequests (You'll notice a "!" on the map and above an NPC's head when they have a quest for you, more open up as you level), and main scenario quests net a nice amount of gil. If you do quests in all 3 cities you will acquire a fair amount of gear too so you can save money there.

You can make a nice amount of gil levelling up a DoL job -- fishing is pretty cheap and is a nice moneymaker, alchemists and culinarians will buy your fish from the mercantile houses.

Miner is nice if you want to sell ores to Goldsmiths, Blacksmiths and Armorers

Botanist is nice if you want random mats for Culinarian, Carpenter and Weaver etc.

You can even make nice cash from killing animals for their skins, such as sheep, goats etc. NPCing marmot skins nets around 500g each

Remember while you're levelling -- some gear upgrades you can skip, if you can hold out an extra 2-3 levels while you're in the pre-40 stage and make sure your next upgrade is a significant bonus you'll save a lot of money since you'll level out of gear/weapons quickly.

Sorry for rambling, I hope this helps♪

alt-tab will crash the game if you're in full screen mode. I think they'll address that issue in version 2.0 because of the new graphic engine they'll use.
