It's almost as if there already existed a line of games where you can go experience a heavy focus on school living and slice of life content whereas Final Fantasy serves a different niche.

Your ideas about a "heavy focus on school living" is half a level's worth of quests on an island noted for its Academics, with most of that time spent in an underground research facility?
Your "heavy focus [on] slice of life content" incorporates a single scene of a meal before the world even starts to burn?
Go play Final Fantasy X sometime and then tell me what 'niche' Blitzball falls into. Edgy combat? Dark themes?
To be honest, I actually found the Scion's 'slice of life' scene to be an interesting contrast to the Jullus 'Soup' scene at Camp Drybone.
I don’t think anyone is saying we shouldn’t have epic fight cutscenes, it’s just that you and some others are hyperfocused on 5 second bits in a few cutscenes and saying it’s “slice of life” and acting like it changes the entire genre of the expansion. There’s many hours of other stuff going on in the MSQ, we’re bound to have downtime and filler and exposition. All I want to see the animation budget allocated to the most plot-relevant cutscenes as opposed to slice of life ones along with better crafted character development. There really shouldn't be any sort of pushback against this. I just want to see things improve. Please let them do something meaningful with this current cast or please retire these characters if that isn't the case.
Should we have asked SE to remove all the camp and diner eating scenes in FFXV? Does that ruin that game?
Those little Slice of Life cutscenes help to increase the impact of other story elements. It's the calm before the storm, etc..
If only the storm in question involved lasting consequences for the main cast perhaps such scenes would feel more relieving and not so much as out of place distractions.

I know people like to defend complaints with this logic, but it only goes so far.
If you are generally enjoying the game and like the overall direction of it, but have issues with specific elements, it's fair to stick around and voice your hopes that the things you don't like will get fixed.
But if you're really unhappy with it over a long time, or the things you object to are core elements like where the writer wants to take the story, and the things you want changed are a matter of taste rather than inherent issues with the game... at some point I think you have to say "this game just isn't for me, and it would have to change at a fundamental level for me to like it, and there are other things that cater better to my taste".
Ngl, kinda wish the Scions were all killed off at the end of EW so we could spend post-EW recovering and moving forward with the not-so main characters still around.
Imo, if were getting a brand new story and stuff in 7.0, should be a fresh slate with new companions.
