Well, the golden rule is: play as you want to play. (yep, sorry, but it's true).
That said, I'll tell you the way I play:
When i make a new char, I enjoy to put some concept in him/her. Like: "this one here will be a magic master (all heals and magical dps)". Or... "this one here will be versatile as a melee and a bold tanker".
I do that because I don't like the omnipotent feel we have in this game (one single character can do everything, like a god...).
And, how I do that?
EXACTLY like you do: leveling 2 to 3 classes/jobs (or more) alternating between them as I progress level by level in each one (limited by the concept I gave to the char). So, for a magic Master, as i level Scholar and White mage I also level black mage and red mage. When one of them reaches another lv, I change the job and continue the quests. When doing roulettes, I try to go mixing the jobs (based on what role the roulette is giving bonuses). In this way, I never get overleveled and never bored since my char fits into a concept all the time. It's easier even if I do some RP with the char.
It's a bit slow to progress in this way, but I enjoy doing it A BIG LOT MORE than being omniscient and omnipotent or focusing in just one job to rush like if my char needs to pee on the moon since lv1...
So, you just try to find the way you like most. What way gives you more meaning while playing this game. What you think is more enjoyable for you and go for it![]()
Don't care much about the others. I always regret when I dediced to rush stuff because someone in the FC told me that "the only fun is endgame". It is NOT the only fun stuff, believe meI like to do side quests (yep, the yellow ones) as I reach a new place for my char. It's slower, but meaningfull to me.
