Throwing in another vote for giving RDM a try. You generally don't have to cast heals. Raising is cake. Queue up your dualcast and change targets then swap back.
The great thing about XIV is you're free to play whatever however. Talk to your friends more, rather than these people here. They can be more help figuring things out

play a redmage, and don't think to much about it, if role play is what you want then Redmage can believably role play, a fighter, a healer or a dps mage.
