I agree. I think SE is just trying to be nice, but it's creating an in-game "homelessness crisis" while actually doing nothing to address the real-world disaster that motivated it.

Seriously: for rational people caught up in a brutal war, would losing your in-game virtual house be their first concern? Or even their hundreth?

I'm sure they'd love to trade places with you. Instead of trying to punish these players for a situation entirely beyond their control, why not funnel the outrage to Square, who is fully aware of the demand but does nothing but bandaid solutions?

Over on the XIV subreddit, there were many posts of players "caught up in a brutal war" who were worried about how they could keep their subs going. This game means a lot to a lot of people. It's a comfort, and a constant that is untouched by what they face IRL. It doesn't mean they're "irrational".

Irrational is hovering like an absolute ghoul over something that these players worked for and gave them joy, waiting for their tragedy to free it up for you. What a fake "great community" this is.

And no one on the Internet would ever lie about something like that, right?
But yes: if they're worried so much about an insubstantial house in a video game while involved in a war, they are irrational, at the "I do not trust you to babysit children" level.

Oh please. My spouse and I lost a medium and a small when we took a break --
no tears were shed over it.
Since then we've each managed to acquire a house using the lottery system.
So freeing up a house for "us" is not a consideration.

But long term, auto-demolition is necessary, and since there will always be some crisis somewhere in the world, turning it off is bad for the game, does nothing to help people involved in the crisis who actually need help, and is basically nothing more than virtue-signaling "slactivism."

"When you took a break"--by choice. Then again, it's hard to take anyone seriously who cries about a pixel "homelessness crisis", then tells players who are facing an actual crisis to "get over it". What you call "virtue-signaling slacktivism", most people would call basic human decency to other players in an unimaginable situation.

But ghouls gonna ghoul. Post up photo ops with pixel glowsticks and pat the community on the back for being ~so supportive~, but not at the cost of swooping in on those players' housing, which would solve absolutely nothing in Square's broken system.

Funny how it's only "insubstantial" when it's someone else.

Smaller MMOs do housing better and have no auto-demolition or wads of dirty bandaids that pass for "solutions". What you call "necessary" is actually Square making sure players keep leashed to their subs or else lose something devs have artificially set up to be FOMO. Yoshida admitted that himself, when he stated FFXIV would never auto-demo.

If you actual house has been bombed out in an actual war and you're still worried about your FFXIV plot, you probably need to get your priorities straight.

If your reaction to players who are faced with this war is to demand Square demo their houses, rather than demand Square make an actual fix to this broken housing system, then I'd say the problem with priorities is all yours. You're actually trying to say there is something wrong with the players who posted worry for their accounts, not Square's greed, and not the vultures who sniffle how ~unimportant~ those houses should be, so they can swoop in and take them instead. (Pixel homelessness crisis and all. Nevermind the actual people who play the game and are kept from it by RL tragedy, won't anyone think of the pixel homeless?)

It's not unusual in a crisis to look for things that bring comfort. Unless some ghoul wants a crack at your FFXIV house, apparently. Stay classy, ~great community~.

What is wrong with you? Like, seriously, what is wrong with you?

MMOs are social games. These people deserve to have something to return to that brings them joy after everything they've been through.

Priority should be in pressing SE to fix the housing system so supply is no longer an issue and demolition isn't even necessary and relegated to history.

I've spent my life dealing with jerks like you who tell me everything I say, think or do is wrong. Satisfied?

"Half my family is dead or missing and the rest are homeless, but at least I have my small plot in the Firmament!"
    Yeah, right.

How many people in North America do you think stopped paying for their subscriptions who otherwise wouldn't have, because they knew their house was safe for the moment? That's who you're protecting, isn't it?

Congratulations on such a myopic statement.

FF14 exists as an escape from real life. It lets you enjoy a role of safety, privilege, and fame when remarkably few of us enjoy all three in real life. For people experiencing the terrors of war, the worst possible kick in the teeth would be to return to their escape, only to find it ripped out from under them as yet another consequence of decisions they didn't get to make.
