the different types of soil definitely do something, each has their own effect. increased yield, increased chance of crossbreeding etc.

Yes. They're talking about the third type that makes your crops high quality, which is something they did away with in 6.0. For now, it's just one less thing to bother with.

Plants a fickle creatures. One might decide to bloom early, another too late.

Some might even decide to bloom in the middle of the freaking winter when the shouldn't.

I think timers would be very unwieldy, as plants all grow at different rates and there are potentially a large number of plants growing under each person's care. I would love to receive a passive-aggressive message from my dying plants though
