There's no way you can spin it other than you're being a douche. You can steal a party's mobs if you're farming an item they drop, the game allows you to by design. Do you do it? Hopefully not. Why? Because you'd be a douche.

This is the same thing.

It's not the same and you know it. When somebody is farming a drop that I need in the spot that I want, I look for another spot to farm. If there is no other spot, I go somewhere else close by and find something to do while I wait. Most of the time there is more than one spot that I can get the same drop. Caravan escorts on the other hand, there is room for 1 party and that's it. There is no way to reserve a spot, therefore you cannot reserve a spot, it's first come first served. When the NPC pops if you want a spot, you better be quick. It's the same with roaming NMs and the same thing with behests. If you want to join the fun, you better know how to get the claim.

If someone signs up for Caravan and wants to participate, but is told by a party leader "We're not inviting you", then I've got no problem with them doing whatever. They're trying to get involved but being denied by someone else who's basically being an idiot. The issue is when someone signs up and then runs off without even attempting to get involved.

Ideally, the individual in question will try and find ways to help out anyway. But that isn't always feasible.

This is exactly how I feel. I signed up fair and square but was excluded from the group simply because I did not wake up early enough to join the previous run.

The party leader even exclaimed "I hope you die, bitch!" but I kept my calm and did not report him. I should have though.
