So if you spent time penta-melding your gear does this update render the pact gear not viable going forward?

it's just battle gear not the crafting stuff the right side aka accessories are in 6.3 for crafters.
Very mixed feelings.
In terms of crafting it now means that volume-based crafting is now more disproportionately more favourable than, say, being able to get through the initial 'rush hour' on the first few days, be it for pre-order or progression-based crafting, and as someone who has done this since 4.2 I can at the very least say it is in some sense having the joy killed from it.
Then there is also the sense that it largely diminishes the point and purpose of heavy-melding. Historically this would give a significant edge in the Gil-making process early on, but no average joe is going to spend 700K-2.5M on a piece of gear just to have a little wiggle-room or as an Item Level boost to do MSQ, especially when significantly cheaper, and more viable alternatives exist. You could offset this cost by getting in with the initial rush and communicating with statics, it's much harder to do that, especially when outside of a couple of days the price diminishes significantly. To where even doing older, and less investment-intensive methods of making Gil exist. E.g., Bozja, Eureka, Maps, Hunts.
I can at the very least say with this change the likelihood and personal appeal of actually investing in crafting have severely diminished. This is not to say that the market is dead, because it is always very healthy, just the gains of actively engaging in the content have severely diminished.
On one hand, I am glad that players have the wiggle room to prepare for savage and enjoy other areas of content without needing to compromise. But on the other hand, the amount of communication and collaboration between crafters and raiders will plummet.
EDIT: I want to assume you meant the week delay to savage instead?

For as long as I can recall, SE's patches are formulaic. This is especially true when it comes to the release of new gear from one expansion to the next. It is very common for X.2 and X.4 patches to contain both new tomestones (new gear tier), new raid content as well as new crafted DoW/M gear. That gear is what I call "BiSRN" (Best in Slot Right Now). The average raider that picks up a full set of crafted gear will have the stat bonuses that are 10 iLvl ahead of what they were wearing when they logged in that day. Sure, there are some corner cases where the new i610 crafted gear will have bad substats, but generally speaking... the crafted gear makes the previous gear completely obsolete the moment the X.2 and X.4 patches drop.
If they were to release crafted DoW/M gear in 6.3 instead of 6.2, it would put more value on tomestone/raid/extreme trial gear since there would be MB upgrade available to players with either gil or crafters.
any new crafting materia coming out in 6.3
