Also we had to deal with way more skills and abilities before, especially in HW. So I can't see them simplifying jobs for the sake of making harder mechanics.

To make room for future skills is the more likely reason... but to gut jobs for a whole two years compromising people's enjoyment precisely when the main story finished and the new one still picking up is kind of a very risky move imo.
It is indeed so they can add more skills later. I believe I saw a translated statement from the live letter that explained why drg was on the chopping block. Basically they have nowhere else to take the job as it currently is, so rather than try to make minor upgrades in the next xpac, they want to completely revamp the job. Which falls in line with how smn was described when that was gutted in favor of a level 60 rotation being completely unchanged at 90.

It's also how they described kaiten on sam, which seems like a cop out than anything else.

"The job is well designed and people like that. But we don't know what to do with it next. Welp, time to rework what makes folks happy. We do this for them." Kinda thought process it seems.
