Technically relic weapons are optional as well but linking the two together strikes me as a very strange choice. Especially since we saw the Return to Ivalice/Save the Queen storyline artificially shortened.

Yeah! Exactly! Both bubbles are optional, but one is for people who just wanna have a good laugh, and the other is for people who want shiny boomstick! Normally, people with shiny boomsticks do not laugh.

Also, how can we go from deep emotional story of Borja to a highlander in underwear?

This can only mean one thing...they're joke weapons this time around. Like paper airplanes for SGE weapons, Sardines for NIN, a coloring book for SCH/SMN, etc. So think less like previous relic weapons and something more like the Moogle weapons.

Sounds like a blast to me! Wonder if they'll keep them tied to Hildy quests or if it'll just be this initial step, either way I'm excited for the hijinks

At least you don't have to find a group for 3 alliance raids. First three trials are easily soloable, and the fourth can be done with 2-3 DPS. The questline is only long if you care about watching the story.
