What happened to all the new players that OCE players said would buy and start playing the game if a data center was based in OCE instead of players needing to use one of the other regional data centers? Did they appear but they're still leveling through MSQ so unable to help with max level content queues (very understandable) or did they never materialize?

Personally I would expect it to take a while for the end game population to fill out. Data center travel might help the individual player get access to content but it will not help build a strong local player community, which is what you need.

We were actually talking about this the other day. When the great WoW exodus happened, we had a ton of players join us and swear up and down the ping was soooo bad and that's why they couldn't do end game (lol). They were just gonna do casual content until OCE.

Well, OCE opened, they all transferred there and just stopped logging in. Like, they went from logging in every day on behemoth for months to completely disappearing. They were all up to Endwalker too.

I have no idea what happened. Some were a group of friends but others weren't really connected to each other. Was it time to walk the talk and realize it wasnt the "ping" that was bad? I don't know. It's honestly really weird.

Nobody has linked it yet, so I do just want to drop in and mention that they mentioned that everything is set up to allow regional travel. It is functional, and the *only* reason they gave for not implementing it were economic and cultural.

    > Launching of Data Center Travel System
    > As I previously mentioned in a Live Letter, while the system has been designed to allow cross-region travel, we'll be limiting it to travel between logical data centers within a physical data center at first due in part to differences in game economy and values.
    > We’ll be paying keen attention to the opinions of players as we consider whether or not to introduce cross-region travel in the future.

I hope this dispels any doubt that this is something that requires significant development time. They would just need to turn it on, which while it wouldn't be instant, it wouldn't take long to sort.

Also, please just let me go to OCE.
I've wanted OCE since the game has come out, but they're asking me to abandon all of my friends, lose my houses and pull up all my roots.

If you don't want cultural shock, disable JP from visiting other datacentres.
The rest of the datacentres will be pretty much the same, the worst will be people bickering about using a macro or not, but even that will lessen in time.

Or, in the more diplomatic corporate phrasing, "there are different playing styles in each region." ))
Either way, OCE really got done dirty.
I'm a native English speaker from the US who's lived in Japan and played on a JP DC since I installed the game. I can say with certainty based on personal experience that there are significant cultural differences; not to mention a major language barrier, between real-life NA and Japan that does transfer into the game. There are different play styles as well as different cultural values between the two regions; it's not racism to state facts, it's simply stating facts. One thing NA/EU/OCE have going for them is that proficiency in English is much more common than in Japan. I don't see how it's wrong for people in the Japan region to want to play only with people who are fluent in their native language. I know personally how nervous many Japanese get trying to communicate in English even if they did well in it in school. It's not a fair statement to call "JP Only" parties racist when it's people wanting to make sure everyone in the group understands a common language well enough to communicate effectively. I've studied Spanish, German, and Japanese but I wouldn't join a group where it's been clearly communicated that it's the language that will be used.

Since I'm on Elemental, I heard people wishing for an OCE/SEA data center for many, many years. Making Materia wasn't "doing OCE dirty" or some unspoken means of getting English speakers off the JP DCs; it was a response to years' of requests from the OCE community. Unfortunately, once it happened, they found out they "thought they wanted it, but didn't" and ended up with a much smaller community than they'd expected.
