The world does not revolve around the USA, and I say this as an American.
Square usually seems to do 24H patches on Mondays since Tuesday's are the weekly reset.

They are just following the schedule they always have.

Yeah I don't understand why people are acting like they actively chose a holiday to perform maintenance on. The holiday just happened to land on a day that's already typically used for long maintenance. It's unfortunate, but it certainly wasn't malicious or careless.

I seriously ass-u-me'd that maintenance would start tomorrow because of the holiday. Then I tried to log in. I've been playing MMO's since 1995 and I've never come across this before.

Keep in mind that, if they don't change this policy, it will happen next year as well, as the 4th will be on a Tuesday.

if the patch happens to coincide with it then sure.
it could come earlier -- or it could come later. it just happened to occur today by total coincidence.
