If you are good, and you are consistent, you will push rank steadily over time. There will be dips and crests but you will see a reliable, steady gain in rating over time, if you bothered to plot each game onto a graph.

If it was luck-based, there would not be people with multiple top-30+ alts. Didn't Yoshida himself say that he got to Crystal with BLM several different times?
It's not luck based but severely punishes you for your efforts. While you do everything and make a lot of effort to win them, they are destroyed again by the MM within seconds. You spent almost 10 minutes with the highest damage and carry for a game only to lose it again within 120 seconds because someone can't pot or thinks guard 1 vs 5 to stop the crystal for 5 sek is good. The feeling afterwards is just bad.

Up to top 50 or 30 isn't necessarily luck based but +30 is just pure luck whatever comes. When I look at light, top 2 is a player who only played the first month and never again. Even 1st place is an alt, while his main is stuckt and knows if he do more games he get even more punished.

So the best you can do is even do more alts and hope one get the lucky run otherwise you do the next.
