    About Nybeth Obdilord

Where do people stand on this guy's origins now that stuff like Ivalice, Bozja and the Republic of Landis are places generally associated with Yasumi Matsuno's work?

I know there isn't much to go on with this guy other than "He comes from a faraway land, died at one point and came back as a Lich to bother the people of the Shroud".

But I wonder how does the community find him? Do people think
    • He came from Tactics Ogre directly via some interdimensional passage?
    • Or did he come from one of those Yasumi Matsuno-inspired regions?

Well, we fight an exact copy of him with a different moveset in Delubnum Reginae. So probably comes from there, in universe, despite his name 100% just being directly out of Tactics Ogre.

There's also an identical copy in the Aitiascope, as the last non-boss mob, even down to having the exact same face, so we can confirm with reasonable confidence that he's now dead-dead regardless. They wouldn't grab that model out of nowhere in the Aitiascope of all places.

I actually did a video about the Palace of the Dead's lore, so I've puzzled over this one myself; I've got a reasonable amount of confidence that he and most of the Palace of the Dead was somehow shunted over from another world where either literal Tactics Ogre or 'basically the same events' Tactics Ogre took place; whether it's from another shard or another universe entirely is impossible to say, because both of them are about equally plausible. And since we're unlikely to travel to either, it's also not really a worthwhile distinction; the fact he wound up here is more important than how far he travelled to get there. It is Actual Nybeth with Actual Nybeth's story going by his Echo flashback having a glimpse of TO's protagonist, though.

Needless to say, I am very hype about the Tactics Ogre remake(?), although I hope it's not Playstation-exclusive. The Switch is a godsend for playing long-haul RPGs like that.

I'd say that model is just your average lich model. Not that we're fighting Nybeth again and again in different places.

It should be noted that model is an exact match for Nybeth's lich form in Tactics Ogre (Fandom wiki page here), so at least in PotD he is the exact intention. The others it's hard to be sure, but with Matsuno writing the Bozja content, and the Aitiascope being filled to the brim with references to departed NPCs, I'd say both of them actually have reasonable likelihood of being intentional rather than 'a model we have lying around'. Enough to not be a complete writeoff, at least.

I suspect the Atiascope is at least a deliberate reference to his past appearances, just leaving out the name because he previously only appeared in optional content and a player who hasn't done it wouldn't recognize him anyway.

Since the ghost cameos in PotD are typically of Etheirys, I would think Nybeth also originates from this world, rather than being an interdimensional crossover.
It's likely that, like Final Fantasy Tactics, events very similar to Tactics Ogre took place at some point in history in the "Matsuno region".

Theundead mobs in PotD are explicitly zombies, some of their names describe the decayed nature of their bodies (Bloated Archer, Jaundiced Tribunus, etc). Nybeth's Echo flashback with Edda also makes it pretty clear that he's dealing with bodies. The way they behave is also a perfect match for the undead Nybeth was working on in Tactics Ogre; in that game, he worked on trying to revive a person's body and soul at once, and the results of his experiments are actually what we see in PotD: well-preserved and physically functional mindless zombies, that only reunite with their soul in their final moments before re-death. In both games that manifests as them becoming 'themselves' again for their death line and that's all.

PotD does have ghost mobs, but they're just sorta there on their own thing, I think.

    Neat.
Looking forward to playing TO for the first time.
Looking back over the scenes, he pretty strongly implies he's from another world too. I had forgotten that.
