[dev1002] Will you be revamping the launch story and class quests?

One of the things that really discouraged me in playing FFXIV was doing the rank 26 Ul'dah quest. When I did the quest, I remember [this will be spoiler free] being told about all these great abilities that these npcs would be providing me, but never did (was something like disorienting the enemy, traveling invisible, etc.); how I was traveling with my rank 20 companion (who never assisted in combat), and it really replicated the "ankle biter" quests we're introduced to early on. This quest ultimately disappointed me the most, but all of the other quests I did were similar. I was wondering if the launch quests will be revisited in the future to make them more engaging and exciting, and how that may be accomplished.

    Thank you!

I must admit. While it was nice to have a few CSs here and there the quest itself (rank 26 for Gridania) was bland. I only saw like 2 [enemies] which I wasn't even allowed to fight and in the end all I did for this mission was to run from A to B and back which took like 20 minutes. Maybe you could add more normal mobs so I have a reason to fight with my Path Companion?

    Thanks~

I liked the main quest and its story, but it's really lacking in the battle department.

Trying to avoid spoilers, I only see two points where it's possible that someone may somehow get killed during the fight, and that's R 36 and 46 quests. 46's battle isn't even hard, but there's a little something during the fight that makes it far harder if you're trying to solo.

Class quests battles are even more disappointing. I mean, there's no "crafters need to be able to finish this" excuse during DoW/DoM class quests, but still it looks like the battles are designed to be soloed by someone like 10 ranks lower than the one needed to do the quest, lol.

The problem is catering to DoL/DoH jobs on the main scenerio quests. SE said in the beginning they want to give players the option to be able to play a crafter/gathering class and still get most out of the game without the need to level up DoW/DoM jobs.

I think they should branch out and make a storyline for DoW/DoM that involve battles similar to CoP bcnm's. Challenging fights that require a group, not "You can either fight this Ixal or challenge the hostile beastmen to a friendly game of PARLEY"

It's nice that crafting/gathering does have more of a role in this game than XI, but I would like to see another storyline branch away from the 'fight or parley' option that has challenging BC fights.

    ^This.

In my opinion CoP was the height of FFXI's success, at least for me. It was the first story in the game that actually felt worthy of the Final Fantasy title. I completed CoP way back when it first game out before they took the nerf bat to it and when I thought back on this, I realized what one of the main components that (at least for me) was missing from XIV.

    The feeling of accomplishment.

I can't tell you enough how many times FFXI made me feel like I truly earned a victory and it felt great. It felt like a true accomplishment. I loved the challange. I may have cursed and hated it in the moment but when I look back on it and think "Yeah... sure, it took us several tries and virtually countless exp to beat CoP 8-3. (the pot fight) But when we finally pulled it off I literally jumped out of my chair in excitement."

This is what I miss most from FFXI. Good friends, epic adventures and a feeling of accomplishment.

A lot of people whined and moaned about FFXI's difficulty and it not catering to the casual player and while I agree with many of those arguments, I have yet to play another MMO that gave me that same sense of accomplishment that I felt with FFXI. And I'd really love to see that return in XIV in the form of challenging instances, HNMs and engaging, challenging story-related missions.

I guess what I'm saying is, I really feel like XIV has been dumbed down in an attempt to make it accessible to everyone. I can't do any of the main story missions with my friends and the story missions themselves have been... well, mediocre at best thus far and I'd really love to see FFXIV succeed and do the Final Fantasy name justice.

I'm just having a hard time taking it all seriously. I mean, can you imagine asking Promathia or Bahamut to sit down and have a friendly game of parley with you in lieu of destroying the world? I sure can't.

It just occurred to me. You know what FFXIV reminds me of? A visual novel. Except for the level grinding, we're pretty much just kicking back and watching the story unfold before us. There's no challenge in it. All challenge that exists in this game is completely separate from anything story-related.

I completely and totally agree with this. While I admit to thinking some of the stuff in XI was just plain ridiculous, dammit I want to EARN my story in this game. Or really, feel like I earned anything besides levels.

Not sure what to make of this but I think as far as the DOL/DOH aspect of the question goes I think the easier and more realistic/logical alternative is to declare them crafting classes and not battlecraft classes, take them out of the starting rankings because they will never be able to play that large a role in partying!

With each change brought to the battle system it makes it more and more unaccessible for crafting and gathering jobs to even HAVE a potential role, especially with Square planning to drop party sizes to 4/8.

Back on topic I think revamping and changing the main scenario in any way right now since the game has been released would be unfair to the many many people that have already been there and done it. I personally would want to re-do it, and unless Square add a way to replay old past missions like they did in FFXI with SOME it'd be very unfair.

Also to add I agree with the post a couple above.. Where's the challenge with any single pixel of this games storyline? Every single aspect of it is easily soloable and for me it takes a large part away from the adventure of the game.. It ruins and dampens it.

As well as the fact you can basically teleport to any single area of a Mission you need to be in which again completely collapses any sense of accomplishment or adventure.
