Item Sets - The Market Board Feature You (Probably) Never Knew Existed

    Hi!

So yeah, did you know that for a long time now, there has been the ability to sell items as a set on the in-game marketplace? Chances are likely you overlooked it, or just never knew it even existed because of how badly it's currently signposted in the game. Nevertheless, here is the current process on how to do it:

STEP 1: Set up your items on a Mannequin

So, ideally to even access this system, you'll at least need an apartment, or have a friend with a house who trusts you. Idk. Either way, you put the clothes you want to sell on the mannequin, which if you really wanted you could use as a means of making a boutique shop in the game, probably as the devs originally intended.

Nevertheless, clicking the "Sell Only as Set" option makes it so that the items can only be purchased together, and on market board listings it gives people the option to DM you directly for item inquiries. This bit seems mostly fine, until we get to:

STEP 2: Your Listing is Now Hidden By Default lol

Basically, your items are now hidden from the view of the public unless they click the filters box in the top right of the price listings window, and uncheck "Hide sets for sale.", which is on by default, -and- you have to uncheck every time you search for any item because, well, I'd like to know why too tbh. However, once you've found the item as part of a set, this leads us to:

STEP 3: You Can't Buy It Directly Anyway kekw

Yup. You can't buy sets directly on the Market Board. Instead, you'll now need to right click the item, DM the seller directly (in the hopes they're online/not in duty/not set to busy), then probably go to their house or apartment to buy the item set, leading at least myself to think "What is the point?".

So yeah, basically the item set sales system is a great bit of wasted potential that is currently knacks. How could this be improved, you ask? Well, say less because here are my suggestions on how if changed, this currently garbo system could change the way we buy and sell things on the XIV Marketplace:
    • An entire Item Set listings button that allows you to view listings of current player sold item sets across the server, with a preview window that shows your character wearing the items.
    • Set Item listings unhidden by default, where clicking on a set item takes you to the item set listing on the Market Board.
    • Keep the DM option, but make it easier to find, like with the Party Finder. In fact, just make Item Set listings work like the Party Finder, but in the Market Board. Definitely with a preview window, so you can window shop and all that.

    BENEFITS:
    • Players invested in Fashion Fantasy XIV could compile outfits together to sell, giving the fashion lazy ease of having their outfits planned for them, while also giving us the opportunity to diversify looks and finally escape looking basic/like a Limsa Lominsan.
    • Item Sets could create more competition in the Marketplace, and reduce rampant undercutting through players potentially gaining more value from buying a set over buying items "à la carte", or vice versa.
    • It would be an easier way to introduce new players to the glamour system and the many ways they can dress their character to look/not look like they spent the past 10 years AFK in Limsa.
    • It would be nice, and we like nice things. I mean we didn't completely f**k the Adventurer Plates, so we can still have nice things, right?

But yeah, that's my take. What do you all think, and do you think we could potentially see a change like this introduced to XIV?

    nope.

reason is this, the set up is convoluted likely for a reason, at one point, it was done, but, either no one used it or, the general populace never understood it. best way to hide anything that you may work on later is... off by default, and file under "forget" or " future work if there is time"

plus, not everyone wants to, or can afford to buy a complete set all at once. not to mention, not everyone who sells is going to have a house or apartment to fill with mannequins. for me in terms of glam, I very very rarely by a complete set to begin with.

Honestly, what they should consider doing... have the ability for a crafter to make a set of gear (gatherer, crafter, DoW/M) and bundle it all up into a "Classical Hoplomachus Attire Set HQ." List that on the MB. Player buys it - pops it open. Bam, full set of gear. It would allow crafters to bundle things for a bulk rate discount. I see players trying to do something similar via PF, but that it just clutters things up. And I doubt sales are completed like that often.

Allow item sets to be bundled and sold together using the "attire set coffer" mechanism that already exists.

Hilariously just experienced this for the very first time, after years of playing. When I received the error I google searched it and found this post.

I am aware of the age of the post but am bumping it for two reasons.

    1) It was helpful, so thank you.
    2) Why not let me see the 'set' from the market board, and then allow me to also purchase the complete set if interested- again from the market board? If the answer is "the feature is an accident / don't want to let you use the market for that" then get rid of it, and if not.. fix it?

I suspect part of the reason for #2 is because the mannequins were added as a roleplay feature with the intent of increasing foot traffic in the housing wards and the houses being run as boutiques. It also filled the request some players were making to not have what they're selling displayed on the marketboard while still letting others make purchases when the seller isn't online.

If you can't buy the item from the marketboard because the seller wants it sold as a set, that's the seller's decision and not the game's. I rarely choose "sell only as set" when putting gear I'm selling on a mannequin. I mainly use the mannequin to avoid having to pay the seller's tax.

You might be interested to know that by going to the player's housing where the mannequin is located you will not have to pay the normal 5% buyer's tax either. It's a win for both buyer and seller on expensive gear sets.

That's fair and certainly part of the 'fix it' could just be better communication to the player.

Doesn't 'have' to be purchase from market, but then I'd like to not be slapped with a error message that makes it look like a broke listing lol. If going the more thematic way is the purpose then I think it should just better show that (as until reading this thread I thought I had an actual game error and not bumping up against a feature of the game).
