Them adding 20 additional wards, would do nothing for this problem since demand far outstrips supply. That complaint would be solved for like 24 hours, and then the "I cant get a house" threads will pop right back up and here we are back at square one.

he's going to grift, harass, downplay, disenfranchise, gaslight, stalk, and gate keep!
The other problem with throwing more wards at the problem is that each ward is effectively two zones. The first zone is plots 1-30 and then the subdivision for plots 31-60 which is then combined with an instance for each plot (although I imagine these are then inactive when a house interior is empty). Given how questionable the server infrastructure is for this game at times, I highly doubt they'd be able to keep throwing addition wards and entirely new housing at the problem.
Now they could opt for instanced housing which would instance entire plots, exterior included, with retroactive condensing of existing wards. Rather than being The Mists Ward 22 Plot 1, you'd be The Mists Plot 1 House 22. Now that might read like the same thing but if each entire plot is just an instance, those instances could probably (an assumption here btw) be turned off so to speak when they're not active. Effectively it would be like apartment buildings but for entire housing plots. You would lose the ability walk around 24 unique wards for each district per server but if this approach would provide greater scalability for housing supply, it's probably a sacrifice worth making.
To be fair, even if autodemolish came back on, only 1-5% of houses were actually auto-demolished so far when the system was up. And that's because it's either people really didn't resub the game, or forgot, or actually had personal issues that they can't come online at all, or actually dead/hospitalized/has terminal illness.
Otherwise, people who own like 1 whole ward have kept their houses since the launch of auto-demolish because all they need to do is just login, walk into the house. reset the 45 days and log out.
Auto-demolish whether it's up or not, doesn't really change anything but only giving people the extra days to put less 1 hour effort to log in all of your characters/accounts to reset the demolish alerts.
At the end of the day, people who own entire ward/multiple houses will not get their houses auto-demolished. They'll just keep it empty and unused, and watch others cross their fingers that house will be gone.

There is a "Return to Eorzea" that just started, that's usually a sign that housing demo is close (inside 90 days) to being back on. They tend to go hand-in-hand.

I know you didn't mean it like that but it could also be read as if certain lives don't matter as much because they don't affect as much people. While that is certainly how the world operates it's a bit weird to argue like that over virtual houses.

Sure. but instead of snarky replies (not you.. others) I'm sure down to clarify any questions or misconceptions people might have.
It IS really weird to hear people disregard other peoples lives and livelyhoods just because "they're not me" though.
I'd be fine losing said house if I quit. *shrugs*
I know what I signed up for.

Exactly. I was fine losing my small house and my spouse's medium when we went on hiatus.
Since the new lottery system started, we've managed to get a small back.
Eventually, we'll get back a medium as well. Or maybe even a large, with a lot of luck.
That's the long-term goal, and it's good to have long-term goals in a game like FFXIV.
Why not just make auto demo less than one month of inactivity? It might force players to stay subscribed to keep their house.
