Novice Ocean Fishing Guide by Caimie Tsukino

Ocean fishing has been around for years, but I've only started this recently. I am not claiming to be an ocean fishing expert... hell, I'm not even that good a fisher. But I do think I put in some good thoughts about it, and managed to write up a guide for it. Hope this will help anyone who still hasn't gotten the glowing shark mount yet!

    http://ffxivrealm.com/guides/novice-...e-tsukino.222/

When I was picking up Ocean Fishing, I looked up many guides on Reddit, and I had a lot of trouble understanding them. Some even contained conflicting information, which I found confusing. It's probably due to my inexperience and slow learning. But if I have trouble understanding them, I would think some people would feel the same too. Meanwhile, guides that are outside Reddit appeared to be too simple, and just didn't contain critical information about how to make the best use of Spectral Currents. And then there are many good videos on Youtube, but sometimes I just want to have a list of information on hand to read rather than going through a video... Lulu's Tools is great, but without knowing the basics of Ocean Fishing, I didn't know how to use it... So here's my two cents with a simpler guide. I hope it gives the basic information for someone to learn Ocean Fishing from scratch, meanwhile being comprehensive enough to help one achieve 10,000+ points in a single voyage. I have also included some basic information to use Lulu's Tools...

If you find any error in the guide, please kindly let me know so that I can correct them.

    Thanks!

EDIT (7th Aug 2022): I had been continuously updating the guide throughout the past 2 months. While I was becoming more experienced, the guide was also becoming more sophisticated. As of today, the guide has evolved into something that can cater both novice and expert fishers. It first introduces the basic concepts to new fishers. It then covers some complex analysis of routes/areas/time frames for rising fishers to achieve maximum point yield per voyage. Then it eventually explains the 5-star fish game and provided some strategies for endgame Ocean Fishers.

Special thanks to the veteran fishers, Tyo'to Tayuun (Tyonto) Fruity Snacks & King Canadane, for sharing their knowledge, inspiration and passion in Ocean Fishing, which contributed to the continuous shaping of this Ocean Fishing guide.

This is the only form of fishing I haven't tried yet. I don't think my spouse has either, but they fish way more than I do.
Anyway, given how well your previous guides have been crafted, I look forward to reading this new one.

I just read a bit in your guide. Seems quite good I think. But what do you mean with "Registering can ONLY be done immediately (within 1 to 2 min) when a new vessel is about to set sail."? As I remember you have 15 minutes to register. When it was new content, most people registered seconds after it was available and after that you had to wait to get 24 players. But after the 15 minutes are over you get in with however many people are registered. Even if it's just 5 players.

But I haven't done ocean fishing for a long time. Maybe they changed it in the meantime?

No you are correct, you can register for the boat anywhere from the top of the hour it's available, up until 14:59 after.

Thanks for letting me know! I have corrected this in the guide.
I have also added 2 more sections to the guide.
So now it provides more info about bonus, as well as some of my personal insights.

    Recent Update:
    - Previously, on my 5th voyage, I got my 10K score from a single voyage and obtained the shark mount.
    - Now, after 30-ish voyages, I got 20K score from a single voyage and earned the title "Master of the Sea" (twice in a row in 2 back-to-back runs).

I (1) documented the experience in my guide, (2) made some adjustments to my recommendations, and also (3) added a chart for white scrip earnings with respect to ocean fishing score.

Silly question... What does Snagging do for Ocean Fishing? I notice you mention it a couple of times and I've never heard it before?

I don’t think snagging does anything in ocean fishing. I’m almost certain I have caught spectral currents without it?

Snagging supposed to let us catch things that don't "bite". So I assumed things like oysters or kelp might need snagging. When I just started Ocean Fishing, it was one of those little things that cost nothing to do, but better have it active just to be safe. Further looking into the matter, it seems irrelevant since nobody had found it to be useful in any way in Ocean Fishing at all. Apparently, oysters and kelp can still be caught without snagging. So I think I'll scratch that out from my guide in my next update. Thanks for bringing this up!

You do not need snagging at all in Ocean Fishing.
